Brocton,
You are an inspiration. I have a few rods that are just waiting on me to order guides. I just hope the guides I want are available. I need to stock up on Fuji Alconite and Torzite (well not stock up on Torzite, but at least but a rod together with some). By the time I get a rod finished with Torzite guides, I will probably have more tied up in the guides than the rest of the rod.

Awww, shucks, that's real nice of you carlz. :)

Must be noted, however, that we're now on day 3 since my post and so far I've glued the tip top on.

One of my rods that is "on the bench" collecting dust is an Epic graphite 6wt spey rod (Thanks Brockton for giving me a heads up on their sale). What was interesting (and disappointing) is that they shipped the same component kit for their 6/7/and 8wt rods. As such, I got a tiptop that was 2/64" too big. They sent a 6.5 when the lighter bank takes a 5.5. I threw on a tiptop to get going while I order a new matching one.

I'm not unhappy, but a bit disappointed at the attention to detail.

That is annoying.

I picked up a Trout Spey graphite in the sale, and everything came together really nicely. I was hoping to get it wrapped before hunting season started, but that's looking unlikely now.

Working on a fun build right now. It's a 6-piece pack rod made from a Trout Smith's 8'0" 5-weight. With the extra ferrules, I am wondering if I will prefer it with a 5 or a 6 line.

So far, I have the grip shaped and glued up. My take on the Winston-style cigar grip. The insert is desert ironwood, and you can't see it, but it has a nice red undertone that matches that blank really well.

Nice project GR, you’ve rekindled my interest in ironwood. Over the years I’ve seen ironwood turning blanks for sale but never pulled the trigger. Looking forward to updated pictures.

Finally getting motivated again. After a little bit of fishing and a little bit of hunting it’s time to hibernate at the bench for a couple months. Working on a blue halo 8’ 5 weight. Before and after the first coat.

Finished a River Run 4 weight with the "no insert" reel seat style that I'd been wanting to try. Also some pics of a 6 weight Batson graphite blank (shh) I built out with a similar style. Named it "None more black" (Spinal Tap reference for those who don't know, or care for that matter LOL) ....

Falling behind in my projects! But just did a quick and simple spey handle on a 13ft clear glass rod for another board member in the area.

Now I’m down to only five (!) 2 hand rod jobs in the queue...

Thanks!

Have to admit, I've been addicted to the orange/black jasper thread. Looks great on orange blanks, red blanks, black blanks, brown blanks ...

The one I use is ProWrap Tiger Thread - I really like it a lot.

Need a little brightness to get through this Michigan winter. Wrapping an epic 686. This will be used primarily at dusk or after dark during our nocturnal big mayfly hatches/spinnerfalls so I figured I could get away with a little more color on this one.

Good to hear from you Andy!

My bench is filled with graphite spinning gear at the moment. I stripped, refinished, and put new guides on a rod with decades of hard use and am building another new one.

One thing I did learn that is applicable to fiberglass fly rods as well, though, is that Perma Gloss should not be dispensed into polystyrene cups (recycle code 6). I'm just glad I used them while out in the garage for refinishing the blank where they melted into the concrete, rather than in the house when coating the threads where they would have melted into something harder to clean.

I should have known better.

Hello
One thing about mistakes is the bigger the mess you create the more you learn.

Some of my best discoverys were spurned from disasterious beginings

My benches are currently completely covered with junk , dust , dirt ,mouse droppings,N filth.

When I left here I was so angry that I didn't t care if I ever saw another fishing rod.

Never be afraid to try something new or something different, some of my best works were sort of weird to me at the moment they were conceived.

Couldn’t agree more Andy, I was fortunate to score nine spools of NOS Gudebrod ‘A’ jasper recently at auction. Three each of the colors I like most.
