That's going to be some rod! Very well turned.

we'll see...
It's been a fun experiment, so far:
1. Harvest a young (2-1/2"-3") Beech from my property.
2. Split a length that is as straight-grained and knot-free as possible
3. Hand-plane, scrape, and sand to taper.
4. Dry

The project is defined by being 100% hand-worked, and no power tools.
So, this one wasn't "turned" on a lathe or similar.
As a result, it's not perfectly straight, nor perfectly round in cross-section.
('roundness" is checked and controlled by frequent caliper measurements...and feel.)
It's an "organic" stick, 6'9" one-piece, probably a 4wt. but might be a 3 or 5, we will see once I tape on some guides.
and I do intend to fish it on small brookie streams.

It feels pretty good in the hand, so far...

Next steps:
1. Penetrating oil (tung) application
2. Rattan grip
3. Guides installation
4. Intermediates
5. Spar Varnish finish

Not quite on my bench yet, but hopefully in the next week. Picked this up from a local fellow, should come in handy for making trim rings, inserts, and I'm hoping ferrules and reel seats down the road. Most likely from between 1942 and 1957 (I can narrow that down once I find the serial number), but still in great condition. Manufactured in Waltham, Massachusetts.

Graphite spey. Fancier threadwork than I’m usually game for, by request.

Yeah, the accents are birch bark and a bit of a pain. Pretty though.

At the moment? Lots of grease, grime, and parts.

This is what 100 year old bearing grease looks like in case you wanted to know

All in all, getting things stripped down for coat of paint and then back together. Looking forward to seeing what I can make on this related to rod & reel building. List so far includes reel seats, trim rings, ferrules, and possibly reels down the road.

Now I’m redoing a maroon 7’ Lamiglass rod. It had horrible purple wraps that were too long and a big gap between guides at the ferrule. When I removed the wraps, the blank isn’t painted like the Phillipson...great! The grip is a little fat for my liking and the reelseat is just ok. Not sure yet but I might replace both with a Ray Lee seat and Canadian cork. We’ll see. Since the blank is a strange color, I might use white thread to make invisible guide wraps.

After a couple of months building graphite for other people, back to glass for me. This one is on a slightly bastardized, probably one of a kind Anglers Roost blank, 7.5 ft. Not sure of the line weight yet. More on that later, but for now some pictures.

First time I’ve hand sanded a mortise.

Thanks. I found some new rubberized bearings online and it revolutionized my whole rig.

While I'm working on getting my lathe rebuilt I had a buddy work up a second prototype reel seat design. Still needs improvement on the finishing, but the concept works which makes me very happy.

Generally, summertime is for fishing and other activities, but for some reason a couple blanks came my way and I couldn’t resist working on them. One of the blanks is a ********* 864-3 in blue/gray, a color I’ve never worked with before. So for this rod I located some dyed/stabilized burl for the reel seat. Two wood blanks were turned recently and imperfections filled. This morning I cut the tenon on one of them, and reduced to the correct length for a dark nickel Bellinger DL680 reel seat skeleton. Final wood finishing will take place over the next few weeks. Picture shows insert with first flood coat of Pro Custom Oil applied to enhance the grain.

Dark nickel Snake Brand snake guides/tip top will be used along with a Mildrum stripping guide that will be darkened with Birchwood Casey Aluminum Black. The winding check is from Struble, also in dark nickel. Quarter inch cork rings have been glued up, and will be turned into a modified Fenwick style grip I’ve been using on recent fiberglass rods. All components are in hand except for the skeleton which, per Bellinger, won’t be available until early October.

Wrappings will be done with old stock Gudebrod nylon #272, Blue Dun. Guide wrap tips and other trim work will be done with Pearsall’s Gossamer silk, orange. No color preserver will be used on the wrappings so the blue dun will blend into the blank and the fine orange tips will darken to a rust color, as in my test wrappings.

Unfortunately, this rod may not see use until late Fall or next Spring. In the meantime the grip can be fit, and the middle and tip sections can be wrapped and finished.

Jeff

I can't open the photos, but the description sounds terrific. That will be a beautiful rod indeed.

Edit: The insert is gorgeous!

Got busy recently making grips and inserts for a few builds in the works. Several Olde English builds and a McFarland yellow classic 4wt.
