It's been in the single digits or below zero here for the last several days, and I didn't want to work in the cold basement. So I figured this weekend would be a great time to work on sewing up some rod socks.

Here they are, ready for a light washing to clear off the chalk marks.

As a rod builder myself, I am very envious....

Spent some time over the weekend making my first Nickel Silver ferrule

That's a size 16, and it's coming in at 8.3 grams for both parts (.29oz). Pretty happy so far, I'm hoping to install it on a scrap rod section and see how well it laps in and fits.

Laying out the pieces for the finishing steps. This is a NFC 8’ 5 weight blank, Struble reel seat, with a shop turned box elder burl insert.

VDub, those are some nice looking wraps. The finish looks really excellent.

What color thread did you use?

Incidental to the photo of the finished rod, the butt section is shown with test wraps. Hope VDub remembers to link that pic next time we have a query about how to decide upon a thread color or trim combination, how a certain type of finish will look, or even how to wrap. Practice and test wraps, that's how. Perfect illustration, not to mention nice choice and finish.

Thanks all, I appreciate it. I’m really happy with how this build turned out.

The main wraps are Kimono silk 307 (Tuscan sun). The trim bands are Kimono silk 368 (Mt Fuji).

The test wraps are the only way to go. I have learned the hard way that things aren’t always what they seem once the finish is applied.

I think test wraps are an important part of the build process. (I'm leaning toward the wrap on the far right, by the way--Tuscan Sun just like VDub.)

Here's a ********* Western Glass 8'6" 5-weight that I'm working on right now. I couldn't find a thread color that really stood out to me, until I remembered I had some almond ProWrap that I picked up for a build that never happened. On a whim, I said why not. On the black blank, it turned to a nice, rich chocolate color that has a lovely sheen in the sunlight. It goes well with the maple burl insert I picked out too.

Those last photos are great examples of how the thread will change based on the color of the blank as well.

I used the Tuscan Sun thread for main wraps on a brown blank earlier this year. The photo below shows how the final result is vastly different based on the blank color. Same thread, same finish.

That is a really good illustration of how much blank color influences thread.

By the way, in my first picture, the second-to-the-last wrap on the right is that same almond ProWrap. On the amber blank, it looks like a medium or medium-light brown. About the color of an almond, actually.

Nice work on the wraps fellas. I agree, test wraps are the way to go.
I might have to use that Kimono #307 soon. I have some that was sold under the Bullard name (#S-107) that I bought a few years back.

Working on a couple inserts today. I keep coming back to buckeye burl recently. Never know what it’s going to look like until you start cutting. This one still needs a few coats of finish.

Burl insert is figured more than most. Will result in a distinctive seat.

Been busy with a few graphite project (shh), but am making some progress on my Northfork Composites 8'6" 8 weight blank. Teenagers insisted on purple thread given blank color, thinking about a Joker theme :-)

This will certainly not be the most subdued rod I ever build LOL!

Cool. Please post some pictures once you get finish on those wraps. I'm curious what it ends up like.

What stripping guide is that?

Stripping guide is Fuji Concept Double-Foot Reverse Surf Rod Guides Model LC

I love the look of them, and have used them on a bunch of rods. Just cool aesthetics, but definitely not traditional!

This is a Scott g (graphite, yes I know) but it’s a vintage blank. Original Scott graphite from San Francisco. I bought 2 blanks from Randy at retro glass. I did a 9’5wt earlier and this is a 7’10 3wt. It’s silk wrapped and the reel seat is another one from ray lee. This is my latest rod build and the one I’m most proud of to this point. Thanks for looking!!

Hello
Very Nice.
Like your thread design and color combinations.
You did a good job of picking up the tones from the reel seat insert.
Thanks For Sharing !!

Andy your praise really means a lot. Thank you for the kind words! Next rod is a blue heron swelled butt glass blank, 6'9" 2/3wt. I'm just waiting for a tip top to come in for it to really dig in.

Finally been able to move some projects forward this week. Finished wrapping and now getting some finish on another giant spey rod for a friend. A little shorter than the last one - this one is only 15’1”.

Brocton,
Did you turn that bottom handle? And I would love to see a photo of that upper grip. That beast looks gorgeous.
