I recently picked up a bucket list reel for me - A San Jose CA built Sierra King. Basically a beta test Thompson reel. It’s in decent shape. I’ve cleaned it up on the inside gently. It looks good. I’ve not owned a reel with this style mech before. Is there anywhere I need to add a little hot sauce? I don’t see how to remove the spool either. Any advice?

looks like a clutch (or maybe that's just a drum) with both adjustable click-pawl and adjustable drum-brake.
All in a Hardy Perfect clone.
Nice reel.

Looks like you took the screws out of the winding plate and left the drum assembly likely threaded into the spool spindle.
Put it back together, and try moving the spool and winding plate CCW relative to each other.
The winding plate is the only way you'll get enough leverage to break the joint torque.

Sort of a Public Service Announcement. The reels are silent wind on uptake, click outgoing. ... These reels assemble and disassemble like a Hardy Perfect. I've seen lots ... still looking for a Floyd T. Lovens, San Jose Thompson 100. That is all. :) R

Also check the spool side for a thumbscrew.
That has to be removed before the spool and winding plate joint will separate.
If it has one, may be LH threads - try gently tightening and loosening to see which way moves easy.

You see the thumbscrew slot in this Hardy fits a coin.

No screw. The CCW pressure worked nicely. Everything looks good. Should I put a little hot sauce anywhere?

bingo

Even prettier now - this is always the prettiest part of reels to me.
They're all round on the outside.

I always grease drag gears and oil everything else, including thrust bearing.

What’s a thrust bearing? Is that like a muffler bearing?

Can I use Boeshield to oil it?

the ball bearing there is not a radial bearing, it's a thrust bearing like a clutch bearing - because we tend to push inward when we wind reels.
Without it, and only with the frame bushing, the bushing will wear into a cone and wobble.

here's the collared thrust bearing on a Dingley perfect.

Great reel. I purchased 5 Thompson's from Jim Adams some time ago and getting them ready for the Spring. The Sierra King versions are pretty rare compared to the SF models, rare in their own right. A thoroughly refined Perfect with a fantastic braking system and machined from a block of duralumin. I have complete box and papers for the San Francisco 100 and 500 models. I'll post them tomorrow. I never saw the box and papers for these Thompson’s? Can you post them?
