Most Excellent ! Too bad it is not a "ringer" but that can be fixed if wanted.

Nice set! Quite uncommon. Curious what is in the small parts envelope? And what the catalog number is on the front, bottom right of the manual? I have one dated April, 1951.

Thanks Brian. Interesting that the owner bought two spare plastic drag plates when the original would never wear out.

The pamphlet number is the same as mine three years earlier. Pflueger updated that pamphlet frequently and I previously thought a 1954 reel would have the 16th -18th version.

Again, congrats on that find. Some may find the LHW 19 detent drag plate worth as much as the reel. so they can repurpose it in a 1494 when converting one to LHW.

Yeah ! Fantastic photo series. Those drag plates do look to have been purchased at a later time. It was easy enough to pick up a spare for pennies when ordering something else from an outfit like Coren's Rod and Reel Service (in Chicago, as I recall). Never needed one yet. Minimal lubrication and keeping the spool-mounted plunger free is the key. Lots of aftermarket plates available, many with more ramps. The Pfleuger design and number, though, are about right for the gradual engagement of the friction drag--an ideal "low start-up inertia" set-up before the term was touted as latest and greatest. Too many ramps on the spool-engaged-to-brake side can make for balky start-up at a key moment.

Coren’s. Yep, northwest side of Chicago. Still there. Still a staple of the Chicago fly fishing community.

Thanks for all the nice words... this one probably will not be hitting the river anytime soon.
