So I pulled the trigger on a Martin MC56, my first click and pawl reel! My initial reactions are quite shocking. At first, in comparison to the 1495 Medalist, the Martin feels toylike in its lightness and size. Feels more like half the weight of the medalist vs actual 30% difference (4.25 oz. vs 6.25 oz - can't hardly imagine how a 2.75oz MG3 would feel!). And the sound is quite different than the Medalist's as well. Stripping the line out of the Martin it has a slightly more unpleasant sound as opposed to the gentle purr of the Medalist. Tolerances don't feel as tight as on the Medalist. The Martin looks clean and unfished, I think maybe the original grease which I will clean and replace with Quantum Hot Sauce. I'm surprised at how I feel so attached to my Medalist of 45+ years, I feel like I'm betraying an old friend with this "modern" click pawl contraption! Don't know why I didn't have this same experience with my nymphing reel - perhaps because that with the 10 ft 3 wt was such a completely new style of fishing? I guess I'm slow to adapt to change, and the real test will be taking it out on the stream! :)

I think you will like the Martin Classic on that rod. I’m a fan fan of Martin reels, from the MG3 up to the really nice machines LM series.

i like the martin mc series reels too. i've owned a few and they balance well with shorter glass rods. and they perform well on the stream. i think they also made a size 4/5 reel too. a nice reel for stream trout fishing.

I use a Young Pridex 3 1/4” vented spool with a 5 wt line on 7 and 7.5 ft fiberglass rods.

Took the new to me mc56 out to a local pond yesterday to give the reel a test run with my ff755 rod. The noise I heard when stripping line out was horrendous, was a loud and embarassing groan! It also seemed to have a wabble. When I got home I opened it up and noticed some grey gunk had accumulated around the base plate of the spindle (wax?), the base that the spool sits on (you can see the grey stuff in the photo above. Why is the orig. factory grease applied so liberally on the pawl, drag caliper etc. but Bulldog only recommends light greasing of the gear and spindle top?). So I gave it a 30 min. vinegar and water bath, then took out some cleaning supplies, alcohol, mineral spirits and tried to get the gunk off, as well as all the factory grease. Seemed to get the grey gunk off for the most part, down to the plate and gave it a good blow dry with a hair dryer and then let it dry out over night. This morning I greased it and oiled it as suggested on this site's cleaning thread and put her back together. And I am pleased to say she is now singing a sweet song both on the strip and the retrieve. There is a slight dent on the spool rim so I'll have to report back when I get a fish that is big enough to test the balance of the spool. Happy camper!

Edit: Christened the MC56 today with the ff755 - seemed like a pretty good match! Comstock Bridge, Salmon River, Colchester, CT

The ff755/mc56 match is working out nicely! It feels well suited for my local smaller streams and rivers.

The family has grown!

Got an MC78 for my FL96-6 (FF806 blank) as I find myself using that rod more than the FF755 lately. Wanted something lighter than the 1495 and left hand wind and will line it with the Cortland Peach DT6. My first love will forever be my Medalist.

excellent !
the MC Classics are overlooked, but I think they are wonderful fishing reels - light, that unique Martin click/pawl design, and even have the newfangled exposed rims and counterbalances..

Put some bend in the 806 last night on the Farmington River and the MC78 performed admirably as well! Was casting the Peach DT6 70-80ft across the river with ease. This guy fell for the ole cats whisker btw!

Enjoyed going through this post. I have a couple of Martin reels and like them on my 6wt rods like you - I have a 96-6 blank (FF806) as well and the 67ss is a good match, as is the 856-2 and 856-5.

Labrax, I put a bid on an 856-2 yesterday but was outbid, we'll see if one is in my future, though I must say the 96-6/806 seemed to do just fine last night with the 18" brown :)

So just another update - have been hitting the Farmington River mostly this past month and the FF806 has been the go to rod (acquired a MC78 to go with a DT6 floating Peach line). It is working well! The bigger brown was caught on a 16 sulphur spinner and the handsome spotted brown on a large cream cased caddis. Was hoping to take my 82 yo Dad out to the river when he visits me next week, the FF806 was his rod after all, but they have opened the flood gates of the dam and not sure the river will be fishable when he is here
