Kalamazoo Empress No. 1689 Model D:
This reel has the look that is fitting of its name “Empress”.
The reel has both exterior and interior unique design features. The exterior handle side has a side plate that is ported with 10 large holes and 10 small holes. Looking though the holes you see the aluminum spool which is also ported. The back side plate is solid with both plates being aluminum. The reel is anodized in a deep blue color that has kind of a neon look to it. It has a classic look with a great color. This reel was made for Kalamazoo Tackle Co. by Shakespeare it is their Au Sable No.1864. The Au Sable is first offered in the Shakespeare 1941 catalog with the added side plate drag button. However most likely the Empress was offered post-war late 40’s – early 50’s. ( Bulldog has a post that shows this reel in a Wards 1951 catalog) My research shows no one has seen a Kalamazoo Tackle catalog.
As for the interior you can see by the pictures the unique drag feature. The round pad slides up and down depending on how tight you set the pressure with the side plate drag knob button. The pad rubs on the outside surface of the aluminum spool. This pad drag only works in RHW. You can change the reel to LHW but will only have the click-pawl and gear for a little drag pressure. When I got the reel it was set up for LHW and it worked okay but I wanted to be able to use the unique drag feature so I switched it back. I think the reason the drag pad is still there and in good shape is because the reel was used in LHW.
Reel 3 1/2in / Spool 3in x 7/8W x 7/8inD / 6.5ozNL / 6-8wt
I am thinking of matching it up to one of my 1948 Narmco Conolon 408 Cardinal 8 1/2ft or 1952 Falcon 407 9ft rods. Also a 9ft bamboo 6-8wt might be nice especially if it has a blue reel seat.

I have one Kalamazoo (blue) and two Shakespeare (green)---as you have said it is a unique drag system. Another reel that the drag responds similarly but has another unique drag is Bivans' Arnold----both reels drag get stronger as line is pulled out. The nice thing about the Kakamazoo is you can adjust it while fishing. I have found that you have to be careful putting these back together. You have a beautiful reel.

I need one of the Kalamazoo models. The blue color is very stunning. I do have a green Shakespeare Russell 1889 GE.

After seeing the Russell that JBurch01 posted here I thought it might be interesting to show some of the other reels that have this side plate drag knob using the spool side as a brake drum.
The best information I can find from catalogs shows Shakespeare started using it in 1941 on some of their models and their trade reels. They continued with it post war from 1946 to at least 1953 from what I can see in catalogs.
I used the small picture format so hopefully it will not take a lot of space up.

Shakespeare 1900 / GA 1940 (in 1941 Catalog) / a Hardy Perfect Clone / also has adj. Click-Pawl Drag

Shakespeare Russell 1889 / GK 1941

Shakespeare Russell 1891 / GK 1941

South Bend 1190 / 1941 / a Hardy Perfect Clone / also has adj. Click-Pawl Drag

Shakespeare Russell 1889 / GE 1946

South Bend 1689 / 1951-53

Shakespeare Au Sable 1864 / GD 1947

Never found one when I had the rod, but always thought green AuSable would be a perfect match for the heavy tip section on a 1290T -
- especially the rod version with the spring-loaded green reel seat.

It is great to see some vintage, American made reel photos again. Thank you so much for sharing them.

Interesting reels. They must be relatively uncommon. I've never seen one of these in real life.

I'm going to have to pull out one of my perfect clones to start fishing it. They are really nice reels.

This book was originally published in 1947. This is a 1962 printing. Not sure if this is the original or updated cover. But, the reel in the picture appears to be a Kalamazoo or one of it's cousins.

In addition to Shakespeare and Kalamazoo I've seen these reels badged for Southbend and Lyon & Coulson.

Have to wonder if sold by any other names.

(GRASSNGLASS) Barry, good eye to have found the reel on the book cover! I think that reel is most likely a Shakespeare Au Sable No.1864 which was available in 1947 with the 10 hole side plate porting. It is the same reel as the Kalamazoo Empress. The earliest I can find the Empress offered is 1951 and the latest is 1953 which I think might be the last year Shakespeare also offered the reel. The only other companies that I have been able find that Shakespeare made these reels for are Kalamazoo Tackle Co., South Bend, and Lyon-Coulson.

Yes! Good eye, Barry. Probably quite a widely sold reel in its time, being from a major tackle maker that grew further as the plastics revolution came on. Look up enough Gadabout Gaddis stuff and you will probably find him using one. Looking over a lot of other outdoor media of the time would turn up still more, no doubt. Pfluegers were probably the most often pictured, but any of the makes common in hardware and country store sporting goods sections would show up in the mags.

excellent thank you.. I have that same reel, blue Empress, have not yet finished cleaning it up or fished it. My plan was to hang it off one of my South Bend 6wt cane rods..
I've seen them in green and red/maroon like bulldog's example as well, always liked the look.

doug in co, that is a great option to use it on a late bamboo rod. I have a South Bend No. 47 (9ft- HCH-6.1oz) 1951-53 so it would be prefect for the reel’s time period. I was thinking early fiberglass to match with it but cane is a good idea to try also.

Yep. He used one (along with a Panfish Special) in a bluegill fishing episode.

I just wanted to add an informational update to my previous posted information. My earliest date for the Empress being offered was in a 1951 Montgomery-Ward catalog. However I just found a 1949 Montgomery-Ward catalog that has it listed and says “a new reel”. This would match up with Shakespeare (who made the reel) offering the reel ( Au Sable 1864) with the 10 hole ports starting in 1947.
