Hi all,

What sizes does the Hardy Bougle come in and what is the diameter of the spool for each?
I have a 2 5/8” spool and am wondering what size reel it is for.

Thanks,
Mike

Bougle comes in Baby, 3", 3-1/4", and 3-1/2".
Here's the spool face on a 3"

Online search says the Baby Bougle diameter is 2.8 inches.

Ron,

Thanks for the information. I have another Bougle reel that measures 2 1/2” from the outside edge of the reel body and 3” from the outside edge of the pillars the spool is 2 1/4”
On the inside of the reel body it reads
JWS
USA 338
And on the plate with yellow handle
Bougle Reel and around the center of the plate HARDY’S ALNWICK PATENT. Any info on this reel?? Is it possible to make it a little quieter?
Is this reel made in England?

Thanks,m for your time,
Mike

If it was made in England, it would say England - this is MkIV, Hardy moved offshore after this version.

1000 MkIV reels were serialized, this reel, s/n 34, and has a wood grasp.
MkIII and older have ebonite grasps.
The first Baby was a Japanese-market reel.

surprise, surprise - look what's on your streamer

The sound of a reel has never been an issue for me. The spring tension matters.
If I think it's too stiff, often a problem with offshore reels, simply squeezing the spring leaves together in place with needle nose will help.

Ron,

Thanks again for your expertise. I will try squeezing the spring leaves.

Best,
Mike

It's past tense and Ron was talking present tense, but there was a 3-3/4" Mk IV version as well...

Isn't that a 1903 replica reel made in 1998? It is definitely made in England if so. I believe 1000 were made for the USA and 1000 for the rest of the world. It's a fantastic reel that's been somewhat underappreciated perhaps because it's considered right hand wind only - - except if willing to give up adjustability, you can adjust or flip the circular spring to have higher resistance on payout than retrieve on left hand wind. It can surprisingly take a WF 5 and a fair bit of backing despite the apparently small size.

That's very likely going to be a spool for a 3 1/4" reel. However, spools from England made reels and Korea made reels are not exactly the same and fit may not be perfect across all series of the reel.
