Has anyone tried one of these reels?

They are pretty looking reels, but I wonder how effective their drag system is.

Thanks,
Barry

If these are the "vintage" series shown on the website at a substantial discount, then they are probably similar to the "golden trout" model, which I bought a couple years ago when they were 50% off.

One thing to be aware of which wasn't immediately apparent to me: to remove the spool from the reel body requires the use of a screwdriver.

They are a bit heavy, too. It was kind of an impulse purchase -- I still haven't fished mine, though I agree it is a nice-looking reel, and it came with a nice leather pouch. You can find more info by using the search function with the words "leland golden trout". Some nice pics in those threads.

Often those 'screwdriver slots' are cut to fit a coin, such as a penny or quarter. Unlike a screwdriver, the coin metal won't bugger up the slot.

Thanks for the tip, Tom ! A dime worked in mine.

I'd forgotten how nice the finish on that reel was... have to find an excuse to fish it now ;)

I ended up getting both the Brown Trout model and the Classic Trout model.

Both are really nice. The Brown Trout looks nice on a Fenwick!

Thanks,

Doug

I had one of these and when I compared it to my Hardy reels I was a little underwhelmed. I heard some issues with rivet security as well.
