I’ve had great fun using my Shakespeare Tru-arT Automatics fishing for panfish and bass. Anyway, I saw a Garcia-matic used, like new, on the auction site, and bought it without doing any research before making the buy. It looks a lot like the Shakespeare reels, anybody have any information about it? I did a search here and nothing showed up.

Interesting. I've never seen one, or heard of it.

I have the Garcia 710 automatic and it's a good reel. The Garcia Matic kind of reminds me of the recent Pflueger automatics.

Magicwrench, the model I purchased is the 1431. What model do you have? What weight and length of line can you get on it? I am seeing some 1430s for sale as well, but don’t know if 1431 is larger or smaller.

Had to find mine....it's a 1431. Not sure what line is on it, guessing a WF6F. I have the clicker (is that what it is?) taped one way, so something there must have annoyed me.

Thanks Magicwrench! That’s what I want to put on it.

I have 2 Garcia-matics model 1430----the button that looks like a clicker button actually stop the user from winding in line----not sure why Garcia thought that would be useful, but maybe some sort of a safety. Anyway, other than that, it works just like a other auto's of the time. Hope it works for you.

I got the Garcia-matic today in the mail, and this reel was in pristine condition... cosmetically. Problem was, the main spring is broken. Thankfully, the seller immediately refunded my money. He didn't know anything about how to operate the reel, so didn't know it was broken. To tell you the truth, I prefer the Shakespeare Tru-art reels aesthetically. They "look" like higher quality, but I can't speak to the mechanical aspects comparatively speaking. The Garcia may well be just as good, or better. However... I don't think I'll be in the market for another Garcia-matic. Just my opinion. ;)

I agree with you... the Shakespeare Tru-Art is a beautiful reel. The good looks almost make up for the weight! ;-)

The Garcia 710 I have also lacks that "quality" look, but is very practical with a drag to pay out line even after the spring is fully wound, and interchangeable spools.

The Shakespeare Tru-art reels are heavy, I admit, but four of my vintage fiberglass rods are 8'6" (I wanted the longer ones because I thought they'd be good from a kayak or canoe sitting down). Anyway, I don't notice the heavier weight. I wonder if the longer length is responsible for this? I would think so...

I forgot to mention that the Tru-Art is my favorite automatic, despite the weight. And it can do yeoman's work helping to balance long, heavy 'glass rod!

Just got a Tru-art 1835 in the mail today. The pictures looked good, but in-hand it is even better. I wonder if it was ever used. Mechanically, it works great. It has the 5/8 inch spool, so I am going to try it on my Fenwick 765-3. I put a WF-5F line on it with minimum backing and it fits great with about 1/4" freeboard.
