Bought this baby online. Got a great deal. Feels like hardy made magnesium but not the mark series. Earlier? Any info please share! Pics below.

no, I don't believe that is magnesium. Looks like a check variation on the Viscount frame.
What you have there may be the Last Hardy-made Battenkill.

The Battenkill Mk were magnesium.

I wonder if there is a way to tell? The reel frame certainly looks the same color as my other Mark series reels (I have a 3 and 4 currently). Both the reel body and the spool feel like that brittle, light, magnesium feel of the mark series. Also, weren't the Hardy Viscount reels made of magnesium (Maybe some of them only?) . I remember reading some of the Viscount and Battenkill Mark spools are interchangeable.

Here is an old topic (unfortunately a lot of the photos were lost).

Is that spring original?

Is it light enough to be magnesium?

can't tell by color, because they're both anodized (thin type I)

One way to tell for sure, find a bare spot inside the frame and touch a q-tip dipped in vinegar.
Magnesium will react vigorously (aluminum won't react).
Chase it with soap and don't rinse the soap if it's magnesium (rinse the soap if aluminum).

You guys were both right. Did bulldogs test just now. No reaction.

Just got this battenkill. Also hardy made. Lightweight clone? Heavier than the original reel I posted above.

That’s a nice looking reel. I didn’t realize there were so many iterations of the Battenkill. What do the internals look like?

The 2nd reel looks great...metal spindle hub cap instead of the usual black plastic one.

That first reel is very interesting.
It isn’t numbered(III,IV,V), and the Battenkills I have use the typical hardy hairpin spring, or the circular spring like your second reel.
I wonder if that is a very early model of the Hardy Battenkill.
