Thanks for posting the pics Tom. I wish they would have kept the nickel silver line guard, but it is a handsome reel none the less. The finish looks really nice to my eyes.

Very nice looking reel. I'd buy 2 or 3 if they made it in the cfo iv size.

Thanks for posting the pix. Very nice looking reel. I'm glad Orvis brought this back, even with the minor changes.

The CFO is a classic design.
This version looks very nice. I prefer the black delrin handle over the wood the Abel version had.
With the original Hardy built CFO's and many spare spools I won't be needing another CFO though... :)

Trying to figure out what the serial # inside the reel meant?

I think I'm still in the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" camp. 2012 Hardy limited edition CFO III for me!

I'm guessing it translates as follows: Made March 3, 2022 and #175 in the production line.

I am a member who loves the original CFOs. And the original CFOs have been my favorite reels since the 1970s, and my CFOs have gotten a ton of use over the past many years. Based on use and wear IMHO I would only want CFOs with a replaceable line guard.

I agree that the new CFO III reel’s body appearance is very impressive...yet I do wish that Orvis would have designed a tad more classic reel foot.

Tom, I wish you a fish filled future with your new CFO III reel.

Best Regards, Bob

Thank you for posting the pics. Reel foot does look out of place. A black canvas micarta spool handle would have looked nice, and stood out from the other versions, as well as being functionally superior.
I'm sure it's a fine reel that will last a lifetime, however not a C&P reel I would purchase in that price range.

It is the only one of my CFO III's that will not fit under the reel seat of my H.L. Leonard. It fits on the fixed end, but the moving end will no slip over the foot. Besides the newest model, I have a Abel, a 20th anniversary (I assume a Hardy made), and a Screw Back.

Mine is 48 units after yours. It would be interesting to see some other serial numbers.

Mike, are you saying that new CFO you bought does not fit like the older models, not even the Abel made version?

I was able to get it to fit, but it requires the reel seat to be open to the max, and then the reel has to be perfectly placed on the seat. The foot is very slightly longer than my Abel CFO, maybe 1 or 2 mm.
I didn't try hard enough earlier to put it on my H.L Leonard. My Leonard is a 6wt rod so I wouldn't normally be using a III on it, but I do have a Cortland Sylk DT6F spooled on the 20th anniversary CFO to use with this rod as it looks great on it.
Edit: I measured the length of the reel foot on each of my CFO III reels. The Abel, 20th anniversary issue, and both screwbacks measure 2 13/32, and the new one is 2 15/32.

Wow - quite a snappy looking reel in that black.

Thanks for sharing those.

A black hard anodized CFO - now there's something to covet! If rods should be brown, then reels ought to be black :)

Could someone who owns the new CFO and still has an empty spool stick it on a scale, please? Orvis is claiming 3 ounces, which would make it even lighter than the original cast version (lighter even than the smaller CFO 123 of the ‘90s), and machined bar stock is a denser material. The very similar Abel version CFO III was right at 4 ounces, IIRC, and I don’t see any place where they could pare a full ounce from this design. Orvis marketing may be playing a bit fast and loose with their description.

The Abel CFO III was 3.5 oz.

The original 1970's version CFO III without the line guard is 3.0 oz., with an additional line guard 3.25 oz.

Hey Cross Creek - the new CFO III weighs in at 3.3 oz.

Thanks, Tom. That makes more sense than 3.0, but is still quite light, and lighter than I expected. I might…..

Thanks for all the info here. I’m on the waiting list for the next round of CFO production. Orvis expects to ship September 2, but I’m hoping they’ll be ready sooner. I agree it would be interesting if Orvis produces some different sizes of the CFO now that they have moved production in house.

One note on the reel weight - the Orvis website description says the new CFO lll weighs 3 oz, but Orvis recently published their reel manuals online for their current models. The reel manual says the new CFO lll weighs 3.5 oz. Glad we have Tom here to independently verify that the actual weight is 3.3 oz.
