Did the Noris versions go from a brass spindle to a steel spindle on a 3 1/2" Condex? I'm looking at one (pictures) and it appears to be a steel spindle. Thanks

Every Condex I've had (6 reels) is brass spindle.

Beaudex and Pridex had stainless steel spindles.
I've never owned a Shakespeare Condex (post '66), but it wouldn't be difficult for them to change that MOC - maybe that's what made it "Super"

It sure does seem that not all Condex reels had brass spindles.

I've seen several Pridex reels with 2 checks, where the added after market or did they make some that way? They were all later models.

Your reel again was made after 1966, and probably after 1968 - you might even find an embossed date inside the backplate.
Young was such an engineering company, with the exception of snagging free paint from Dunlop, they're not apt to make random changes like Pflueger did frequently, but systematic changes.
They made symmetric check Pridex beginning in 1958

"They made symmetric check Pridex beginning in 1958"

Was the symmetric check meant to provide for easy conversion to left-hand wind, or simply to include a spare pawl and spring?

quick switch LH/RH wind.
The beauty of Young's postwar round-head pawl design, any RHW Young can be switched to perfect LHW by tuning the spring (reshaping and set-temper).

"The best of both worlds is a Brit reel on an American rod."
If you make a list of fly reels made in the 1950s, and look at their condition today, the Young reels stand out for design and durability.
Same thing if you go back to the 1930s.

It doesn't end there. Young reels from the 80s were excellent, and you can't find a finer click-pawl reel than the Jubilee that closed the line in 2001.

The Young reels are wonderful. And they continue to be affordable, which is a nice bonus.

I think I have about a half-dozen of the Beaudex models... love 'em.

Be patient and you'll find one in the condition you want for a good price. You won't be disappointed.

Yes sir. It seems 98% come from across the pond, which obviously makes sense. I can't get myself to spend my money abroad, but I'm sure one will show in time.

I'm also a sucker for the Airex reels.
