I've read that the single action Valentines can be improved by some factory upgrades.

Can anyone tell me by looking at pictures what upgrades this reel could use?

Thanks
Barry

There are no upgrades to improve the single-action Valentine - there are stainless pillars to replace the anodized alloy pillars.
Salt exposure can "weld" the anodized pillars and stainless screws with corrosion (making vise-grips on the pillars the only way to separate them).

The upgrades are for the planetary multiplier - replacing the splined-round knob with a rectangle-section smooth knob, and anodized aluminum gears replaced with Delrin.

Notably, 8/9 is not the line rating, but the reel diameter in mm - 89 mm = 3.5 inches.

Thanks Ron, for some reason I thought there was an upgrade to drag.

I was wondering why the 89 when the reel doesn't seem that large. On the postal scale it weighs only 8.25 ozs full of line and backing.

Barry, the drag is really simple - metal washers and the Delrin ratchet plate - doesn't keep it from working Great at extremes and everywhere in between.

The ratchet is also part of the drag surface, and is one-sided - if you need to change wind direction, need the opposite ratchet plate from Valentine.
If you don't need it, might take it apart and clean it to see for yourself - the drag is made to run dry - no grease or oil.

Sorry I don't have the parts diagram, gave it away with the reel above, which I sold - too many good reels in the niche.

I had changed ratchet plates on a multiplier many years ago.

This one is set up for left hand wind, so I'm good here.

Appreciate good information here. No plans on letting her near saltwater so pillars might be good.

Thanks Very Much....

I believe there is a larger drag adjusting knob available from Valentine for the single action reels. Give them a call, very nice folks to deal with.

They did offer a plastic drag knob replacement for these if you had interest in changing out the stock one. That is if it is an early one with the aluminum knob.

Yes - confirm the drag knob upgrade. Personally find the original better looking and there isn't much difference in functionality.

Aluminum drag knob looks good to me.

I sent a message yesterday asking about replacement pillars, but no response yet.
In reality I would probably just mess up the screws trying to change the pillars, so they're good.

Barry, Valentine bros are first an aerospace fab shop.
I've always called, and the receptionist is on top of the fly reel parts.

Thanks, I wasn't certain I wanted them and I hate to bother folks unless I'm serious.

When I was needing clutches for my multipliers I called and had immediate help.
