Hi all,

I recently lucked into a new old stock Orvis Superfine Glass 7' 3wt rod. I'm in the process of pairing it with a reel and I think I've narrowed it down to two...both of which I already own.

The first is a Hardy LRH Lightweight. It balances very well, if just a weeeee bit heavy. But, it is a vintage classic, looks good with the seat hardware, and is a fine piece of kit, etc.

The other is a Galvan Brookie 3/4 in silver. It too, matches the seat hardware, has a better handle, larger arbor, but has a much more modern skeletonized aesthetic.

Both are proportionally close to the same diameter. The Galvan Brookie is about 6/tenths of an ounce lighter than the Hardy so it might be a wee bit tip heavy as compared to the Hardy.

Given that I'm ultimately going to sell one...which would you keep?

The Galvan just does not have the same sound, so if it were me, I would sell that one.

To be fair - I own both and have experience with both - and would pick to do everything to keep both.

That fly rod deserves to have both in its life - no ?

Buy a Hardy Featherweight for the rod. The Hardy LRH is a classic that matches great with a five weight line and a heavier rod.

The Galvan Brookie isn't my kind of reel. But the aesthetic choices are to make you happy, not me.

Well, it's not an Orvis 3wt, but it is a Hardy Featherweight. The rod is a Hardy "stream" 3wt glass rod. I'd love to see a Featherweight on the Orvis equivalent...

realize this conversation is about over since OP just bought a featherweight but my 2 cents and IMHO: i stick with "form follows function". todays modern fly reel is tomorrows "old school". what reel works best looks the best to me. also the orivis 7' 3wt isn't old school yet, its light as a feather and would probably work great with a newer Ross Colorado, also light as a feather. i use a Battenkill III on that rod with 4wt DT.
