I’m trying to date my Grandfather’s fly rod and reel. It’s a Brookline bamboo rod with an automatic Mowhawk Martin 6 Fishing Reel. The patent numbers are 2-175-756 and 2-301-732. From the info I’ve found the patents are from 1939 and 1942. Does the Martin 6 mean anything to anyone? I’d like to have a plaque made to display with the rod so am trying to get as close a date as possible. Thanks for your help!

What you have there is nice, basically hardware store tackle - it gets the moniker "blue collar" though that may not be the best description of the people who owned and fished it.
Unlike today, it was a time when people couldn't justify more than one rod and reel, and both the item and finding time to use it was more valuable to them.

If you don't have a sales receipt from the hardware store, it's unlikely to date it closer than you've already done.
There is not going to be a registry for the rod. I'm sure we could find the reel in old merchant catalogs from 1940 forward, but again, not sure how that helps narrow a date beyond the patents you found.

Borrowed from the internet, there are enough of these out there, the question has been asked before

What is a automatic Martin Mohawk fly fishing reel worth? Not sure the year but it is blue and silver & has a 6 or a 9 stamped on it and the pat.#'s are 2.175.756 , 2.301.732

Patent was applied for in 1940, and published in 1942. You reel is after this date. Value depends on condition.

Martin got their start in 1898, and this is a 1903 catalog listing, which doesn't relate directly to your reel.

Blue collar tackle is a perfect description… my Grandfather was a quarry man. I’m going with “Circa 1940’s”, thinking he got the rod after coming home from WWII. Thanks so much!

Post-WWII is a perfect estimate. US and world manufacturing revamped to provide both homeowner and leisure-time items.

The reel seat identifies your grandfather's rod as a Horrocks-Ibbotson trade rod.
And for that matter, the cork grade is very typical for H-I.

The very same grip and reel seat is on Ward's Sport King M/65 bamboo fly rod (B) below from '51 catalog.

Nice. If dollar value was an interest, it's far more valuable as a keepsake, even just the photo. The rod-reel plaque will be a valuable momento/memento, the nuances of each spelling variant being appropriate. Great plan, and thanks for showing.

Y’all are great! Thank you Bulldog for the information on Horrocks & Ibbotson, I’ve spent most of the day researching and not much working. LOL

Great tribute Whrlpool to your Grandfather!

Harry Truman once stated he only fished Horrocks-Ibbotson rods.
