Good morning,

I've been without a glass rod for a while, but no more! My 7-3 rod from Chris came in last night. I took it out to Valley Creek this morning. It casts beautifully, but the reel, a medalist1492, kept slipping out of the front ring. The foot seems too thick for it. I don't want to bend the ring. What are some mid-price options for other better-fitting reels?

Thank you

You don't need to replace the reel and you have 2 options: You can purchase a Onepfoot replacement reel foot or what I have done is to get a wooden dowel or something similar, approximately the same diameter as the reel seat. Then tightly wrap some coarse grit wet/dry sandpaper around it and take the concave bottom of the reel foot down to where the ring works, when you get there you can take some fine grit to smooth it if you like.

Replacing or sanding the foot is the quick option.

But I haven't seen a modern reel that hasn't worked. Most vintage reels work too, but some of the medalists are really problematic.

The 1492 DA is common, so I wouldn't worry about sanding the foot

However, just browse some of the old topics with photos to find something interesting and ask about it here.

Hardy reels will fit, but they are a bit expensive. An old orvis battenkill would look nice.

Thank you. I may sand it, but I also reached out to Joe and Jamie.

Another vote for OnePfoot or a reasonable facsimile.

If you are fishing Valley, you are close enough to give Bob Selb at the Classic Fly Fisherman a call and drive up to Lansdale to pick up an M-Parts replacement reel foot (equivalent to a One Pfoot).

Bring a screwdriver with you and you can be back on Valley in 45 minutes with a proper fitting reel.

A strong vote for OnePfoot and another against sanding

I bought the reel from Bob, lol. I'll give him a call. He's got a SouthBend rod I can't stop looking at. Gives me an excuse.

You should definitely look at the reels he has there too :)

There is an able TR-1 that would do great.
I also think a small orvis cfo or lamson LP-1 light would do great.
There are too many nice little reels out there.

Of course, I will. Probably won't unless I sell something. We will see.

Topping OnePfoot to mention solution to ornery Martin reel foot.

My first contact with Bill was asking him about putting a Pfoot on this M-68, since the foot-screw centers are the same.
All it took was measuring the distance between the side plates, so he could make a set of custom spacers.

Beauty reel. You come through again with the best toys. Your Martins cannot be matched.

Hey all, I keep trying to get in contact with Joe at Onepfoot a few times this month and haven't heard back. Bob is kindly searching for one, but I know he is super busy. I may just buy another reel at this point, but are there any other options I could look at? Thanks.

I ordered some parts from onepfoot earlier this month and received them within five days of placing the order through the website. I knew exactly what I wanted so I didn’t reach out to them before hand and try and make contact, but if you know what you want I would not hesitate to place an order.

caddis75:

The OnePfoot folks are back on the job so if Bob doesn't come through, all you should need to do is order the "1492, 1494, 1495, 1496" foot at the top of the page:

https://onepfoot.com/parts/

Make sure to look at the existing screws on your 1492 so you know which type to have included with your replacement foot:

I'd venture to guess you'll see your OnePfoot replacement in a day or two.
