Reel for an 8 weight

Hi:
I recently picked up an FF858 and need a reel for it. I’m not sure what I should be looking at so am seeking recommendations. I live pretty close to a bass and pike pond so don’t need the backing capacity that a saltwater person would need. I happen to have a new triangle taper 8 wt line so hopefully that will work

The fleet farm in the nearest town had an Okuma reel that would work for I think around $70 but it seems somehow wrong to put a new reel on an older rod. So, any recommendations? For what it’s worth, I really do want to have a left hand wind reel.
Thanks,
Paul

Medalist 1495 Made In Akron, OH reel with reversible line guard. The drag disk should be replaced with a Onepfoot or M Part (Bob Selb's The Classic Flyfisherman, Lansdale, PA) reversible drag disk, cost about $30 last I remember. SWEET

A classic Fenwick really deserves a classic American made reel and you can't go wrong with a 1495 or 1495 1/2 Medalist. Some other options include the Shakespeare Purist and the Orvis Madison. The Purist reels were Shakespeare badged DA Medalists produced during the time frame when Shakespeare owned Pflueger. The 7596 is equivalent to the 1495 and the 7597 is equivalent to the 1495 1/2.

The Madison 8 is an Orvis badged 1495.

Some of the bigger Martins would also fit your needs. The reel on the left is a 77W and the other reel is an MG-7LS.

If you need more weight, one of the disc drag Martins like this MG-7/5 might work.

Thank you both - I’ll start looking for those.

Young 1510 or equivalent. It has a very nice weight for that rod, built like a tank, 2:1 retrieve rate (much faster retrieve rate than any large arbor), a drag that is more than adequate for freshwater including pike, musky, and carp, available for less than $100. Get one that has metal gears, not nylon. You just have to be patient. More than worth the wait.

Hardy Marquis 8/9. (Love the multiplier version of this reel, but just checked prices and they are out of sight compared to what they were twenty years ago.)

SA System 8 which is basically a Hardy Marquis.

An old Fenwick needs a 1495 or 1495 1/2.

Not to be argumentative, but I have somewhat contrary thoughts to some of the above, or just different experience.
I have a bucketful of Medalists, (really the only reels I've ever used) and for 8wt DT prefer the 1498 over the 1495, I also liked the feel of it better on the FF85. to me the 1495 is best for 6 & 7 wts. but I guess that's just a preference thing. I like some "free space" so that all the line will fit when it's reeled in sloppy.
I'll just go ahead and mention that in frequent use for about forty years I've never had a problem with the nylon (?) ratchet plate that came on the DA models. If I ever live long enough to wear one of those out, I'll probably replace it with a spare of the same kind that's been floating around for years. The OneP-foot parts are nice, but imo unnecessary for a Medalist in good shape. I try not to fix what ain't broke.
The Triangle Taper will fit the !495 better than a DT does, it's about half running line, (a WF8 is too) but for me it's not the best bass fishing line, for big and/or heavy flies I'd rather have a shorter taper or no taper, to go with the short heavy leader. I'm not after delicate presentation. TT are all taper and when I've used them, to overcome that feature, and to make them work better in close I liked to go up in line rating.
1495 1/2 holds almost as much line as the 1498 and is more available, imo, a better choice than !495.
All these seem to have doubled in price over the past two years.

I’ll second ( and third ) on the Fenwick deserving an American made reel , the 1495 always seemed to be the “go to “ , and rightfully so , just classic and should provide a lifetime of service , Orvis Madison/Medalist era stuff as well , or if you can find one , probably be a little pricey , the early single action Valentine reels might be a nice solution , most folks now though will take those reels with them to the grave , look around at USA made reels of the era , pick one you like , then toss a “what about this one” question here to the forum folks , you’ll always get priceless information and feedback …

Thanks all - the recommendations are very helpful. I live in a pretty remote area of South Dakota so I’m basically left with purchasing over the internet so the specific models are most welcome.

Thanks again,
Paul

I have had bunch of 1498's over the years and I think the backing for these reels costs almost as much as the reels. I like the diameter, but just don't ever anticipate needing as much line as this reel holds. Plus, at about 11 ounces when loaded it doesn't balance with many rods.

I really wish they would have continued the 1496 and think it's size would have been more useful for longer glass rods..

That said here is a picture of my newest reel, which is a 1498.

Barry, congrats on Voss-improved Medalist aquisition - barstock spool, etc.

The only place I use 8-wt is in the salt, and my reels are 3.75" dia.

I always liked this 4" diameter Pridex on my longer and heavier rods. Still pretty heavy at a little under 11ozs loaded.

I owned the reel for years unused, the foot was just to long for most rods. Was lucky and met Bill pFrank at an event in the Catskills and he fixed her up with a new foot.

I'd like to put in a plug for the 1396 and 1496 reels. Their drag is smooth and powerful enough for many larger fish. I use them for situations where fast line take up is a good thing to have and ample capacity is an asset. 1496 weights 6.5oz 1498 8.5oz Easily converted to LHW if desired.

ooh, I like that, the Sunbeam click-pawl is Hardy's best and widest-ranging, duplicated in the JLH Ultralite and two small Cascapedias.

I have a Hardy Princess rapid retrieve on a Feralite FF858 I sometimes use for bass. It also gets used for dragging streamer flies around behind a float tube or kick boat after ice-out, for lake trout and landlocked salmon.

The Hardy Zenith rapid retrieve is another reel I enjoy (similar to the Princess but with a wider spool and more capacity).

An older SA System One 789 or equivalent Daiwa SF 708 will work nicely on that FF858 for your freshwater needs.

Well, here's a different take. Think modern, try Swedish. In particular, Danielsson reels. They are sold direct from the factory in Sweden and delivered to you in 3 to 4 days by DHL. For my 8 wt Orvis SuperFine Glass I use an Original series 2W. However, if you are looking for a reel with a drag the L3W series offers some good candidates. These reels are not well known in the States, but they are very well made, and for the price, a steal compared to what you'd pay for a similar quality domestic made reel. I have no connection with the company other than being a very satisfied customer.
