I have a 6’6 eagle claw featherlight that I would love to pair up with a classic reel. That being said, which model Martin would you guys pair with one of these rods? I will mostly be using it for panfish, the occasional small bass and stocker rainbow trout.

Thanks
Sam from KY

I use a Martin 62 on mine. Balances the rod very well and is very appropriate cost wise. I use a Bass Pro Shops small stream DT 5 which is also cost appropriate for that rod.

The nice thing about Martin reels is you have plenty of choices. Any of the reels pictured below would likely meet your needs. From left to right starting with the top row are the Martin 60, 61, 62 and the Martin manufactured Browning Midas 1. On the bottom row are the 63, MG-3 and MG3SS.

The 60 is RHW only because it has a single cutout in the frame, but the other reels are all LHW capable. The 60 and 62 are smaller than the 61 and 63, but weigh about the same. The empty weight of my 60 is 3.7 oz vs 3.8 oz for my 61. The MG-3 and Browning badged reels feature the Martin helical spring click and pawl check, while the 60-63 have the caliper spring check. The helical spring reels are nicer, but they also go for more money on the secondary market. You can find a caliper click Martin in very good shape for very little money, and they are perfectly adequate for chasing sunfish, small bass and stocker trout.

What looks really sharp on a Featherlight is a Montgomery-Wards Hawthorne No. 60-6447 reel:

See the all brown one here with other "Tuna Cans" that look equally sporty....

You guys are gonna ruin me! I have a Martin 61 on the way from the auction site now(kinda beat up lookin but it was 13 bucks), but I have found so many really cool reels! So know I need a few more rods and a bunch of fly lines. The all brown reels are super cool. Thanks MikeL for the pictures of the spring types!

Thanks

Where can I find a resource to study the Martin reels and figure out where to get them? I’m trying to switch to cheaper, more budget friendly set ups and plan on building some outfits with Martin reels and cheaper fiberglass set ups?

I would say you found it here. There is probably more information on Martin reels in this forum archive that ever dreamed anywhere else.
Simple guide, stick to the USA-made reels - the later China-made reels generally aren't worth owning (the multiplier is the exception).
There should be Martin catalogs in the Reel Papers thread.

I’m the proud owner of two Martin 61 reels now! I’ve got one spoiled up on a 7 foot eagle claw I hope to try out today on my lunch break!

Awesome! There are many Martins that would match. I like the MG-3!
