So what happens when reels ( I have various) show up missing check springs? Can these be made from straight material and then tempered?

Thanks and Cheers,

I've made a few with music wire - actually, this is probably Inconnel wire from work.

The one strip material you can work and set-temper (vs. austenitize+quench+temper) is phosphor bronze.
You have to want to do it - usually a lot of parallel sanding to get the final width.
This Talbot click spring is not yet cut to final length.

So, I'm guessing there is not a handy source of flat spring material?

I just picked up a very nice-looking old Shakespeare Noris 2111 for cheap; something to add to my small collection of low-budget vintage reels (to be used). The drag had apparently been left engaged and the end of the flat drag spring was slipping off the end of the part that compresses it as it moves down the screw when increasing the drag.

I straightened one leg of the spring a bit where necessary and now it operates properly but how long will it stay that way?

I do have a good selection of music wire but I'd likely have to file a groove in the adjuster (and maybe the pawl?) to keep the wire in place if I made a replacement spring from it.

You can't work steel strip unless it's annealed, and then you have to austenitize (1600 F), quench and temper to harden it to a spring.
As I said, I've made music wire work - stainless and nickel is best.

You can work phosphor bronze, and it hardens because you work it (same with stainless and nickel).

With any spring, you low-temperature set-temper the finished spring to keep its shape.

You're welcome to look for phosphor bronze strip in your size at McMaster

Set-temper...

in the oven at 350˚ for 15 minutes... (according to a post of yours I found over on The Classic Fly Rod Forum).

Thanks Ron. You're a wealth of valuable information!
