Please pardon my ignorance on this subject. I've done some reading on the forum on this subject and I'm still confused. I'd really like to own a couple Pfleuger Medalists for my vintage rods but I cast with my right and reel with my left. Do any of the vintage Medalists come with factory LHR or all they all RHR but some can be changed out. Final note - I am not technically capable of doing a changeout. :)

[I moved this thread here from the Fishing forum. I suggest reading the third pinned thread in this forum. For what it is worth, many Medalists on eBay have likely already been swapped over to LHW. With just a little patience, and a small screwdriver, the change over is not difficult. Tom]

Yes you can easily convert most of the vintage medalists to LHW I just did it recently myself. It wasn't as bad as I thought. The only ones you can't really convert are the ones with the round line guard or the smaller 1492s with the fixed square line guard. Its pretty easy to figure out. You just need to flip the inner disc and move the line guards to the opposite side of the frame.

Here is a video showing the process.

Only reels made after 1963 have reversible ratchet plate.
159x were LHW from the factory, and a LW ratchet plate was offered as a separate part in the 50s.
I personally would recommend a OnePfoot reversible ratchet plate over the reversible nylon ratchet plate of a -DA.
The graphite-reinforced ratchet plates from the -AK are very nice parts.

Are all of the Medalist ratchet plates identical in size regardless of which model they come from? For instance, could I remove a plate from a 1498 and install it in a 1495?

The original LHW 159X ratchet plates are very rare, but very neat if you can find one. 16 notches on the outgoing and 4 notches on the incoming. The One-phoot replacment ratchet is a very nice alternative. Much, much better then the original nylon ones that Pflueger used.

we need to talk about something else - Orvis is long in the tooth

Here's the 1937 drag plate - 2 ramps in wind, and 4 in pay

The clickety-clack sound it makes in wind is really cool
