Hey all,

I have acquired a nice Battenkill Mark III with a few extra spools. I really love the reel for balancing out my shorter rods and have been using DT5/6 lines on it. A perfect match for me at the moment.

I was thinking of spooling an extra up with a DT3 from 406 fly lines and I'm wondering whether the thinner diameter of the 406 line and the larger diameter of the reel (3.25") would necessitate a crazy amount of backing. And would that be a disadvantage? Perhaps adding more undesired weight?

My interest lies in streamlining my reels for smaller rods as I'm backpacking, which would mean less stuff carried on a trip (one reel and multiple spools).

How does this sit with you more knowledgeable users. Good idea? Bad idea?

Any input is appreciated!

Here's a trick for increasing the size of the arbor/reducing the amount of backing needed:
Buy some thin composite cork sheet.
Cut a long strip the width of you reel spool.
Use a short piece of electrical tape to tape one end of the cork sheet to the spool arbor.
Wind the cork sheet onto the spool building up the arbor.
When the desired diameter is reached, cut cork sheet and wrap a turn of electrical tape around it and slightly up the spool sides/cheeks (to prevent backing sliding in between cork and spool side).
Spool up backing and line.

This is lightweight, waterproof and cheap.

@giogio
Wonderful trick thank you! This makes more sense than filling it up with backing.

You are welcome - one more suggestion. Bevel the front and back edges of the cork with sandpaper so as to avoid any step - not essential but an improvement especially is the cork isn't super thin.

I just use some nylon twine, under 50 yards or so of backing..
