There has to be a good story or three to go with that.

Sorry about that. I was working on sending a picture of this reel in a PM and accidentally also posted in rod photos.
I'll give a brief story about it though. I bought the reel about 15 years ago and used it for carp fishing in the river on the mulberry hatch.
Pretty good reel for that and looked good on my fenwick rods but I have since purchased some more modern reels.
I don't keep too many reels for collecting unless I have a good use for them

you already have a vote of approval from chief moderator - if he doesn't like it here, he can move it elsewhere - oops, too late

Ha, no problem. I just figured we'd get the same good photo look in "Classic Reels," and maybe more comment/stories to go with it.

Very nice. A person claiming to be from Valentine Tool & Stamping stated on this forum some time ago that their single action reels might be brought back into production, but it never happened, unfortunately.

actually, that was one of the Valentine brothers testing the water.
Note, they have since discontinued the "Classic" planetary, and the only reel they offer is the barstock planetary.
The fly reels have always been a sideline for their aerospace fabrication, but you could say the same thing about Shimano.

There was further talk last year that they were considering introducing a new reel design altogether. They happen to be located near the local fly shop and had mentioned this to the owner.

Simple, classy and bulletproof reels. Years back I bought an 83, a 95 and a 101. Use the bigger ones on the rare occasions I fish the salt. The 83 is too much reel for my trout fishing so it just sits in my collection being pretty for now. They seem to be even more in demand than the multipliers, does anyone know if they are actually rarer? They were produced over a shorter time span but no idea about numbers.

Next time I go striper fishing in Massachusetts (whenever that may be) I will make sure to bring one along - it just seems like that's what they were created for.

Back in the 80s I could have bought a smaller version of that reel in a shop on highway #6 in Pennsylvania.I cant remember the town but I still wish I had grabbed it for $40.

...

They were sold from the fly fishing rag classifieds through the 80s into 90s. The single action was $70, and the multiplier $110.
Keep in mind this was the barstock days, and not too many people reading those rags wanted screw-pillar reels.
They sold more of the planetary multiplier out curiosity - my buddy Stevo bought 3 multipliers then.
With limited interest then, Valentine dropped the single-action, but has continued making the planetary right through today.
It was just the last couple of years they dropped the screw-pillar planetary and continued only with the barstock reel.
So yes, there are fewer single action reels out there.

I had a 350 or maybe a 325
that was my Striper reel
and a 95.
I really like both of them but their hair heavy.
I like to have a 95 again but every time I see one pop up the guy wants a little bit too much money for it.

Both of those were stolen out of my truck years ago

The Valentine Single Actions are my bread & butter fly reels. I've been running them since the late 80's. At this time I have three #83s & two #76s, plus 10 or more spare spools, spare parts...
Can't say enough good things about them.
It appears that the OP has one of the early models (crank spindle, pillars & drag regulator knob). I drool.

I love these reels too. I enjoy the silent drag when stripping out line when they’re switched to left hand wind. Actually blueprof above turned me on to these reels a number of years ago. I find them harder and harder to find these days.

Hello LukeandParker. Oh yes, I too appreciate the "silent out" on these reels. (That said, I also love the chirp of a Marquis or an LRH Lightweight).

Here's my herd of Single Actions:

I much prefer reels that make noise on the way out. I want everyone to know when I have a big fish on.

I was at Bears Den fly fishing the other day , just a few towns away from Valentine and was shown a few NEW reels , I thought they had stopped making reels after the old man passed away but was told they are still making some reels , been driving past that building for years. Nice to hear they are still making gear.

I've bought and sold many reels in my time but seems my Valentine reel is always still there when the dust settles. Just something about it I can't explain...
