Hello,
I just got one of these rare birds for a song and am wondering if the friction drag is meant to operate with the crank handle held firm. It seems to be set up as such.

Thank you, Ron! I had seen your post from 2010 with the paperwork, but of course I still doubted myself.
Oddly, the Orvis Battenkill version I have is a dual pawl set-up.

Here it is in RHW position...
