I managed to finally luck out and score what I believe is a pretty rare reel perfect for short and ultralight rods. It is a Shakespeare 2850 that is 2 3/4" in dia and machined from magnesium. A fairly light reel capable of a double taper 3 or 4 line. It is in excellent shape but I need to clean the old grease out. Can a magnesium reel be cleaned with the vinegar bath or should a different approach be taken. EDIT Reread the cleaning post and found the line on magnesium. Boshield still the best idea?

Russell

congrats Russell, that's a very desirable Young-made reel.
Looks like they lubed with automotive grease - I can smell it from here.
Definitely begin with boeshield. The active cleaner and carrier in boshield is mineral spirits, and if you don't mind having it around, might be a good choice for short-term soaking to soften the gunk for a toothbrush - outside, well ventilated, etc.
(I clean my bicycle chains in mineral spirits)

I believe that thread is what got me keeping an eye out for one. Just reread it and cannot believe it is from 2007. Didn't realize how long it took for one to finally pop up for me.

noteworthy, Jim Young had bought JW Young back from Shakespeare the decade before this reel was commissioned from him.
