Just picked up this Martin 67ss off evilbay... 15$ plus shipping.. in all 22.75. Will need some cleaning in side and out from that damn grease they used... a welcome addition to the ever growing collection!

You did well. I paid a little more for 67SS-A off ebay.

Nice reel. If you look for spare spools, 67SS and 67SSA spools do not interchange. 67SSA has a larger diameter spindle. I love my Martin reels.

that could be incidental. I've had two LM45 reels with two different spindle diameters. I kept the one that matched my Browning MZ34, kept two matching spare spools, and sold the LM45 and spool with odd spindle size

I have one 67SS and got 2 spare spools (in boxes) marked 67SS and both are the small diameter spools. The three 67SSA reels I have all have the larger diameter spindles.

yes, and I had two LM45 plus one Strada MZ34, with 3 spare spools - all purchased separately and new boxed - the Strada matched one of the LM45, along with two spare spools, but one LM45 and matching spare spool had different diameters from the other four.
If Martin decided to change spindle size, it wasn't because of model, but because of production stock.
I'm sure Steve and anyone else with a large number of Martins can come up with similar examples.

I guess I'll just have to pick up some more of both to continue my research.

Even Hardy did this to us on Lightweight series reels.
The worst for random dimension changes are the Olympic/Seiko Hardy clones.
I had a Heddon that fit a Berkley spare spool, where the Berkley reel wouldn't, and an Eagle Claw that didn't fit the spool it came with.

The Martin SS reels are very sensitive to spindle alignment.
Reels that have been dropped inevitably rub the rim on the faceplate ring.
Took me awhile to adjust out the rub on an LL Bean model.

One other thing interesting about the Martin reels is the 67SS takes a F25 spool and the 67SSA takes a F27 spool. The F25 spool will also fit the Orvis branded 1915ER / Green Mountain 1 reels (smaller spindle). The F27 spool will fit the LL Bean branded Angler 1 reel(larger spindle).

had an Angler 1 and Angler 2, but never compared spindles.
I remain not a huge fan of the SS reels - sort of seem like an afterthought - but love the clean-sheet-of-paper LM/MZ poor-man's CFO.

I've always liked a reel with a palming rim, but each their own. If only the LM/MZs were still made! To paraphrase an old quote of Andy Roonie (a very good woodworker, by the way), "In my dreams, all my reels are - insert the reel of your dreams". This also applies to rods. His quote was, "In my dreams, all my tools are sharp". One of my dreams also.

Very ambitious to keep check all those fits. Keeping them straight, even more ambitious. Don't know if I could do it even with a dozen of mine placed out in a row. I have bunches of extra spools but am not much of a spare spool swapper, preferring to carry spare reels. They don't all interchange, that's for sure.

For repairs or replacements to make better use of prefered spare spools on a prefered frame/reel body, the spindle is relatively easy to change, so one of a different size, (let's say, from a junked out parts reel) could be installed. Let's see. Use a good-fitting gunsmithing screwdriver. Apply penetrant and let it work for a good little while. I think the spindle screw is reverse threaded. Don't force in trying to loosen or it may shear. More penetrant and just the comfortable effort that the tool enables.

that issue is drag v. click-pawl. Martins are poor-man's Hardys.

Vtglassman maybe the LL bean Angler DS has the same spool size as the 67SS? What are the Spool diameter and inside spool width of your 67SS? In Martin reel papers they give a specification of spool depth. Is that same as Inside spool width? Bulldog you are spot on with the comment on Martin SS spindle alignment sensitivity Since that was the problem with my dropped LL Bean Angler DS and I wasted a good spool In my attempts to fix it.

The drag reel spool has a clutch plate where the click-pawl reel spool has a drag gear.
The Bean DS reel may be a proprietary assembly, with no equivalent Martin model.
Not sure how this discussion ended up on four different threads.
