Hi Friends,
The spring on this reel (top right in picture) broke last weekend while playing a fish. How would one go about replacing it?

One thing about symmetrical check reels--designed to be used with only one pawl engaged--is that the other "side" of the spring and its pawl may be used as spares. Temporarily, at least, you could engage the other pawl. That would give a slight difference in click resistance because the winding direction bias is opposite to what you had. Better, slide the spring off its post, turn it over, and reinstall it so its leaf is in the position of the broken one. Slide on and engage the pawl, mirror image position. Perhaps the other pawl was lost when the spring leaf broke; if not, that's a handy spare.

While you are at it, clean the reel. Congealed lubricant with debris mixed in--especially mineral fines present in most water--makes a good slow grinding compound that can damage spots like the point where the spring bears an the pawl. Lubrication--refreshed occasionally, but only after cleaning--will prolong the life of all the parts.

Bill Archuleta at Archuleta Reel Works will have that spring. Shoot him an email or a pick up the phone.
