I have a new Larry Kenney 8' 5 piece 5wt coming around christmas and I am starting to look for a reel. I want a 5wt reel and a pair of spare spools to carry a couple different sink lines (at least one extra with a sink).

I really like the look of the new ross gunnison 4/5 but it is 6.3 oz, maybe that is not too heavy for this rod? I also have always wanted a hardy perfect, but it is also pretty heavy and I am not sure about the screw spool removal and how that wears over time? Would these be good options for what I want? Any other suggestions?

this is my #2 choice behind the gunnison right now, just sort of not classic looking enough for me. I do have many other glavan reels and think they are a very solid choice.

They are Tanks.

which color Kenny did you buy?

I have a nice Marryat 7.5 I would sell (dark copper) if you bought the brown blank

I like those for sure, but they appear to be out of production.

I was looking at the lunar 2 hub-less reel from swift river. It looks like the price has come down, but the weight is up there at 5.8 oz! they do claim that it is a fit for their 580 rod, which I would think is close to the kenny 8055 rod. What do you guys think of that reel?

I sort of landed on the hub-less reel cause the uplocking reel seat hardware Larry Kenney uses has sort of a steampunk look. I also found those L.H. design reels, really cool looking, but I don't know anything about them

The good thing about the LRH and CFO’s are readily available in the second hand market. Same goes for spare spools. That both reels look great on glas rods.

I use an Islander IR3 on the Kenney 8055. I like the skinny foot and IMHO it's the best production click pawl on the market.

Go to the Danielsson website, take a look at the Original Series Nymph W. I purchased a reel and 2 spools from them 3 months ago for a total (shipping included) of $261 USD, the reel by itself is $144.00

Do his rods need a thin reel foot?

Totally agree. Islander reels are the best

I ordered my 8055 with a cap & ring and cork spacer so it definitely works best with a thin foot. My other Kenney's have up locks and wood spacers and work just fine with Abel TRs and Creeks which have a pretty fat foot. I think Larry offers both types of seats with his 5 weight rods.

I have his 3 piece 8' 3" 5 wt. and when I got it I asked him which reel he liked best on it and he said he preferred a Hardy Princess. He thought it balanced well and he liked building up the reel with backing so he could get it to function more like a large arbor reel.
I figured that was good enough for me and I've always fished it that way. I know your rod is slightly shorter but it's something to consider as the five piece 8' 5 wt. is the same weight as mine, I believe.

I a really liking these suggestions. Do you guys think one of the new able tr 4/5 reels would look out of place on these larry Kenney rods? they are not the most classic looking reels.

I am getting the brown color, blank, I think it is the only color he does and I like it anyways. So I was thinking a black reel maybe?

If you base your reel choice on the line type and backing capacity you will be using most often, the fishing you will doing (as to, for instance, your preferred type of drag,) and an approximate weight range, it will look fine on the rod. One of the click-pawls mentioned, or similar, would be a no-brainer to me and many others for typical 4/5 'glass uses, but yours may be different. And, gosh, if still communicating with LK about your purchase, ask his recommendation.

I have an LK 8255. I've been using it with a Princess, but feel like a bit heavier reel would balance better. That Ross Gunnison may be just the ticket for your 8055. My solution was to put some golfer's lead tape inside on the backplate of the Princess, which has work out well and might be a good option if you like one of the lighter reels.

I decided to go with the Islander IR3 suggestion. I have a 406 wf 5wt line for my float line. For the spare, I am leaning towards either the rio intouch camo intermediate or the SA camo intermediate (not sure which one is better). Thanks for all the suggestions everyone, this reel is super nice!

I have a Hardy widespool perfect (3 1/8 i think) that is "perfect" balance wise but i wont change spools although its easy. I have a cascapedia with a T130 for sinking tip i switch to if i have to.
Mine is the sliding ring down locking reel seat. Thin foot would be good. I think the LRH is a little light for that rod/reel seat combo for balance.
