Hardy Ultralite Disc (the black, standard arbor version) #2,3,4 or #5 can be run silent or with clicker. Just like the JLH but with a drag.

on the cheap end, Abu Diplomat fly reels are silent retrieve, and can easily be set for silent outgoing as well.
Not made anymore but probably can find them on auction site..
I have the 278, 368, and 256, like them a lot.

Mine is the Loop version (spools are interchangeable) as Danielsson used to make reels for Loop.

ibookje, they're nice reels, i've got 2 of the larger ones for salmon. I like that midge you've got there. So I just checked and Danielsson must be having a sale. i just ordered the nymph w (for a #4) for $137 (usd, normally $161) plus shipping. Just wish i could get one of these in green. other than that, very nice reels.

Bulldog, i like the idea of the marryat. but mine's the gold, and if i sneeze it bends :) not the reel when i'm climbing rocks etc.

Hardy Ultralite disc can be made completely silent. Just remove plastic circular spring and pawl. Same for all reel sizes. If you like a soft click (softer than on true Hardy click/pawls) leave noise making apparatus in place......

Still haven't found a reel, just wondered if anyone has used a cantata reel made in japan and whether or not you can remove the clickers?
Quite tempted to order one anyway if they are good reels, they look nice and not too expensive, just have to see about import tax. Nearly got a Marryat but it just went a bit expensive for me, they look great as well and apparently easy to take out the clicker, there aren't any more for sale in the size I'd want at the moment though.

cheers
matt

the Cantata is a nice copy of the Orvis CFO..
so it relies on the click for drag, can remove the click quite easily but then the reel will just freespool..

There was a version of the Hardy LRH Lightweight with silent check. Rick's Rods had a nice one a while back, and still might. I've seen them on other vintage gear sites as well.

Thanks for the recommendation Jay, took delivery of a "Dry Fly" Traditional reel & 2 spools last week (<$300 USD delivered)...getting spooled today with a 406 DT3, DT4, & DT5 for use on glass rods. Smooth and simple, I like the fact that the overrun prevention works like the "drag" on my Ross R series reels...resistance is the same for line going in as well as out which provides instant feedback (lacking a broken tippet) regarding whether or not the resistance is too much.

Same here. After you recommended it on another thread a while back, I ended up picking one up over the winter (a Dry Fly), and I'm excited to use it this season. The quality control is excellent and the machining impressive. I'm sure it will be a favorite.

It has my vote for a silent reel.

The Valentine Single action #76 & # 83 reels have a quiet "put-put" in the "in" direction & a silent out. I've used these sturdy reels for more than 35 years, enjoying the quiet while fighting fish or when I'm stripping line.
While I love the iconic "click" sound of my Hardy LRH or my Scientific Anglers System #5 reels (Hardy made), I also value the silent out of my Valentine work horses.

My only nod to modernity in reels is a Tibor Light, a mid-arbour reel. The clutch pins, the drag surface & the out-going click ball bearings are all contained in a compact drum. Removal or installation of this component is a breeze, just slide it off.
I have ordered an additional drag drum from Tibor Reels in Fla. With the two "out-going click" ball bearings + springs removed, the reel becomes silent on the out & a click cranking in, just like my Valentines.

Joe Brooks liked the Johnson Magnetic. I had one once and it was a nice reel. It is silent though.

If the drag is the same, then the clicker can be removed. I've done it quite a bit.

Finally got round to buying a new reel, Danielsson nymph. Won't be using it for a while but first impressions of it are good. Nice and light for the diameter. Not 'silent' but a bit of noise of the bearings, I'd guess this is even quieter with a line on. I really like the design of the central tension screw.

You got a fine reel. Do go get a few spare spools too as it broadens the use of the reel quite a lot. And Danielsson's spare spools are very cheap compared to other reels.

A non silent reel is in my idea noise as in unnatural sound that makes a duck look up from his sleep :)

A second for the ABU by Garcia or Zebco. Both good choices for silent incoming.

Thanks, on the lookout for a spare spool or two. I think this reel will be good for 3-5wt. Also like the look of the smaller Loop 1 model, but harder to find.

With reference to my earlier post # 39, I can now post a picture of a 3" Valentine Single Action # 76 reel which is silent while stripping or when fish is running. The Single Actions have Teflon/stainless steel/Delrin disc brakes.
Cranking in, you get a Pflueger-ish "put-put".

The next size of Valentine Single Action reel is the 3.25" diameter # 83. These are my DT5F or WF6F reels. I've even used a # 83 with an abbreviated WF7F line.
The # 76 & # 83 reels share most mechanical parts, except for their frames, spool flanges & stripping guides.

These reels are considered "Pfluegers on steroids" by bulldog.
