always wanted one of these, the twin-spring Shakespeare Russell with line guard.
Unfortunately this one is sadly broken down, wrong spool screw that does not fit, and the nickel silver mount for the agate ring is there but the agate is not..
On the plus side, it was cheap $25 and the innards are in excellent condition, pawl barely worn on just one side. I've already played with the spring adjustments and listened to it purr ;-)

The screw seems to be fairly straightforward, per bulldog's old posts on the subject, just find a postwar Russell, HI Sportcraft, or Kalamazoo Emperor (oddly if you search for 'Kalamazoo Emperor' up come a bunch of old wood stoves). Then cannibalize the screw from that one..

I'm not sure what to do about the missing agate. The mount is exactly 1" inside diameter, so maybe can find a 1" stainless steel ring ? pondering this. Any other good ideas ?

you can remove those tiny 1-56 screws and remove the line guard, then tune it for LHW if you want.

yes, quite tempted just to go LHW.
It seems a pity to take off that nice nickel silver mount though..

stash it away and look around for someone who may be able to replace the agate.
If you get the agate replaced, you might be able to take the reel to a jeweler and have him install the agate in LHW.
