Yes. The spools are interchangeable. 1498/1598 is as big as they come.

One other question. Are the new 1598 RC's, RHW and LHR also?

you're asking about the last-run patent drag, palming rim Medalist, as opposed to "new".
Yes, they have the good graphite-filled ratchet plate, which is reversible and 8-clicks in both directions, in addition to being long-wearing.

the only problem with the China reels is the frame and spool "plates" are die-cast rather than machined from aircraft plate.
Just don't drop them, and they should fish fine.

My 1598RC feels a lot heavier than my 1498. Spools (and some other parts) do interchange both ways and part of the RC weight is in the palming rim spool, I like it better with a plain spool, but part of the extra weight is in the back plate too.

Stamped from aircraft-grade sheet on the original and all US-made Medalists compares in strength to machined from barstock.
When they went to die-castings for -AK reels, they had to increase the sections to approach the original strength, but not enough to actually get there.
Aside from the improved ratchet plate design, the other nice thing about the -AK reels is the foot design, which gives it wide application to different reel seats.

Would you say the AK reels with a RC spool would be lighter and better then a new set up from china.

different - the RC is the patent drag, and the new Medalist is Hardy-designed click-pawl.

1495 th has no meaning, but the photos indicate an Akron patent drag - I'd bet the line guard was added, but may be there from the 40s.
You can convert that reel with a onepfoot ratchet plate.
You imply that it has been previously converted to LHW - it may already have the correct ratchet plate, and will convert to RHW if you flip it.

Sorry BD used my phone to post the pics.Should have said RH.All it says is 1495 patented.Ring is pinned no screws. It is right hand reel now and wonder if any one drilled out the rivets holding the ring and switched it LH.The handle is gone and the latch cover and drag knob look to have melted via plastic worm but it winds nice.A spool should not be hard to find.

pinned, it's original, a 40s reel.
You need the OnePfoot ratchet plate to convert it.
Moving the line guard would be a tough call - I would probably avoid it to save the reel's value.
I've seen custom factory originals made a line guard going each way, and a click-pawl going each way.
In those days there were still a few people following the old "rings up" convention for winding reels that goes back to the previous century.

Didn't think it was that old, thanks i dont want to alter something that old. May be find a few parts for it and display it.The 2 rings is crazy looking but makes sense the way you put it.There are LHW versions of these? The other Medalists i have had seemed heavier than this one and were later models. Thanks again BD.Get an urge to tinker with stuff this time of year.

Yes, they made 1595 in the decade, but good examples sell for over $500.
One thing, I don't think your reel has the original spool, which would have a metal latch plate.

Wouldn't the drag adjustment also be metal?

Jeff - It should be, but not always.. as we see here. Transitional reels they call them.. from one era -splicing- sort of into another.

if you see that diference, you're making out something I can't make out from the photos.
but 1949 last round guard with a new batch of new plastic could explain both the missing handle grasp and saggy latch plate.
