I bought this reel from a collector who got it from Hoagy. Whether he "owned" it or not, fished it, etc., it is the smoothest purring reel I own. I've never had a reel this much fun simply to play with on a cold Winter day.
I'll trade you Perfects....
When I bought the Uniqua from Hoagy, I was complaining to him about the then "astronomical" price of fly reels like the current CFO's which had just cracked the $100+ mark. He said, "here's something you might like" and I bought the Uniqua from him for $90.
My Perfect was one of a new generation of Perfects with a brown ceramic line guard that were offered, I believe some time in the late 1970's or 1980's in LHW with a screw securing the spool.
Since I can't deal with the RHW wind thing, I never owned a Perfect despite wanting one more than anything! When I went to visit Hoagy one day he had a few in the shop so I pulled the trigger on the 3-3/8".
I had an opportunity a few years back to have Hardy swap out the ceramic line guard for agate for $100 but like a dope, I never pulled the trigger. I don't know if that's even possible today with the new ownership.
In regards to the LHW thing with the Uniqua, despite being RHW, I fished that reel regularly LHW for over 20 years and never felt any RHW bias.
