I need for some advice on values for some reels. I have checked the web and e-bay for prices but for many reels the sample size is small and the variation huge. I will have to do some down sizing in the next year and I would like to get an idea of their worth to help decide what to keep and what to get rid of. I am going to have to ask about 1 or 2 reels at a time because I can’t keep an internet connection going long enough to load more than a few photos.
This time I'm asking about a Hardy 3 7/8” St. John with the 2 screw latch cover and a ribbed brass foot. It came in a lot of 18 reels so I didn’t think about its individual price when I got it (the same lot as the Coates Aircraft reel I previously posted about). I’ve only found a few values online, which range from $100 Canadian ($70 US) to $350 US. Realistically, what is the reel worth and/or what would be an attractive but fair price.
Thanks

Approximately $200-225 US in my opinion. A couple years ago $250-275. :(

I agree with jhuskey. Due to the little bit of rash, I'd put it closer to $200. The older 3 screw St. Johns tend to bring quite a bit more than their younger 2 screw brothers.

Thank you for your replies and estimates. They sound reasonable and match up pretty well with what I thought it should be before I found the low and high prices. I suspect some of the skew in values was because sellers will posting about selling high and buyers about buying low but there are no bragging rights for sales at the "going rate". Also I noticed prices were lower in Canada so if I sell the reel it will be worth using an international platform like FFB or 5th-letter-bay. I have to figure out whether or not I can used the reel enough to warrant keeping it as I can't fish much with 9 + wt rods (bad shoulders). Once again, your replies are much appreciated.

That was in a recent ORCA thread, but think I did better than that. I paid $8.25 Canadian for the St. John, using the average price per reel for a box of 17 reels (Either that or I paid 140 and got 16 reels thrown in for free).
After some cleaning, all but 2 reels were in "fishable or better condition" and no more than 5 or 6 are worth less than the average price. The St. john is the best reel by a wide margin but I bought the lot to get an Alcedo Micron and an older model Ambidex.
I saw the St. John in the box I didn't know what it was worth (actually I didn't know what most of the reels were worth). I thought it was on par with a Viscount and I figured I would at least come out a little ahead the deal, so I paid the asking price without quibbling and walked away guilt-free.

Thanks, I got lucky. One thing I know: it is not a reward for good clean living. Good fortune comes to those who blunder into it.

You could have paid 10 times what you did and you still would have committed highway robbery. :)

I read your post wrong.I now realize you paid $140 for the package, but the Micron could be worth that.

Stonefly.
There are some nice reels but not in the St. John, the Micron and perhaps the Coates Aircraft reel are the top of the heap.
The reels in total:
The St. John
The Alcedo Micron
Ambidex. (#2?)
Coates Aircraft Ltd. 31/2" fly/centerpin reel
a Sal-trout No. 1558 trolling reel,
a Penn 180, (Not worth much but it's got about $30 worth of parts I want for other reels.)
a J.W. Young prewar 3" "Condex-like" reel with the "fishing reel specialists" logo,
a 3" J.W. Young Pridex,
a 2.5" Heaton # 135,
a Weber Kalahatch fly reel
a 3" Ocean City silent check fly reel
an Ocean City fly made 3"JC Higgins click/pawl fly reel with a regular click ,
a low-end skeleton reel,
a very cheap little metal drum reel,
3 old casting reels: a 4 Brothers 1793, A Kalamazoo 1721B and a Herter's 333 (OC 1975)
a large Ueno Seiko centerpin.
The Kalamazoo baitcast and Kalahatch fly reel were the only two not fishable after cleaning, although the little drum reel isn't good for much beyond strapping to a tip-up or crappie pole. I sold the Kalahatch for 5 bucks (as a decoration.)
The Micron has just a bit of rash but the medallion is gone. The retrieve is smooth but it feels a bit tight. I was thinking that it was worth about $75 as it stands but that's just I wag. I think the tightness is just old grease on the handle shaft but I don't want to strip it down until I find a schematic or some details about how the handle is assembled. (I will post pictures of the micron if I can get photobucket to load)

Yeah,I got a Dam Quick 110N that was tight like that and it was old grease. As soon as I greased and oiled it,it works like new.

The 2 J.W. Youngs are likely sellable and the Heaton sounds interesting. The Seiko centerpin might be pretty good as well.Theres a lot of float fisherman out there.

There might be interest in the Ambidex as well.Theres a lot of spinning reel collectors out there, although that may be why you bought it.

I really like the Heaton. Its a cool little reel. I kind of hope that it is not worth enough to make me to part with it. I also like the Youngs but will have to see how much line they reels will hold. If I can fit a small diameter 5 wt and enough backing to be useful I may keep one or both and instead sell an old 3 1/8" Hardy Perfect I don't use enough. (I am 'way too clumsy to fish with the Hardy around things like rocks and metal boats.) I have two old spinning rods that I fish with a Mitchell half bail. I want to use the Ambidex instead of the Mitchell, which I will probably sell (not a Mitchell fan). The casting reels, the Seiko and the St. John are the ones that I have the least use for. I already have some old direct drive baitcasters that I like to fish. The Seiko is big, all metal, and too heavy for anything I could use it for. The St. John is a great reel but I I have some shoulder and nerve damage and can't use 9-10 wt rods for very long. (Either it become painful or, occasionally, my arm goes completely numb and can't hold on to the rod-which can get interesting.) If I take what ever I canget for the casting reels and Seiko, and get a reasonable price for the St. John, I would be well ahead money-wise and take my time figuring out what to do with the rest.

Thanks BD. I learned this by watching you. I owe you a beer.

Sure would love this one more if it had that ribbed foot... but c'est la vie.
