Excellent pforum. I must admit, I undervalued the Medalist a long time, thinking it's price and common ownership indicated a more or less entry level product. WRONG!

My brother was a big fan of them and he is the one who got me off ultra-light spinning (not entirely), into fly fishing. He's one of my hero's for that one. Why I didn't pick up on the Pflueger while under his early tutorage, is still a mystery to me. Fantastic reel. And, deserves every bit to be mentioned up there with Hardy.

Anybody have a 1394 to post? I saw one in half-decent condition at a junk shop a couple months ago and it was still there last week. I might make the guy an offer about when I pfigure he is ready to move it.

In the meantime, how about some 1498s, the heavy duty Medalist.

I love my little Gems, but now that Onepfoot has their stock back on line, I need to get another Medalist and trick it out. Opf course I prepfer click-pawl, but I've been salivating over some opf the great hot rod Medalist pfotos I've seen on this site over the years.

Pfunny thing, I used to have a Medalist that I hung off my old Pfenwick FF (PfPf?) 755, but I stupidly sold it and the rod when we lepft Montana.

Pfeeling pfrisky so bumping the phest! Just got back pfrom a week of travel but no pfishing. This was waiting, so I'm pfeeling pfine. Just pfixed it up to pfish left hand wind. Loaded it with a 406 DT5F (Pfive Pfloating) and just a base of 20 lb. Dacron. Really a snug pfit! A mid to late 1930's Patent Pending 1392 spindle arbor, double wire springs/pawls - 2nd model I think.

One of my Pfavorites is this transitional 1495 1/2.

Notice the single sculpted pillar (Pfsculpted Pfpillar???) This one came to me with a melted winding knob, spool latch cover and drag adjustment knob. Since it was otherwise super nice, I upgraded it with OnePfoot parts. Dan even had a black winding knob for me. Box is crispy, and dated March 1947. I believe the paperwork is original and correct, even though the picture shows a round line guide. I call it "The Black Knight" and it might be cool to put a matte black finish on the spool latch cover as well. I've also considered swapping the drag adjustment knob with one of the black ones you can find on Shakespeare Purist and Sigma reels, which I pretty much consider equals to DA series Pflueger Medalists.

I wish this one was Pfully original, but since it's not, I've enjoyed making it mine.

a Pfleuger is a reel I would never call pfui on ..

I have a sneaking affection for the rim-control Medalists, a 1595RC would work as The One for me..

most recent pfish was on a Shakespeare variant, the biggest sm I've caught in the USA.. the picture doesn't do it justice, 16" with shoulders and a belly, looked immense in the water. I thought I was on bass-fishing TV there for a moment.

Does that 1492 have an agate aftermarket line guide?

Are you referring to the round line guard? That is a late 1930s-40s model and they came with a round line guard no agate. All of the 1492s are stock with the exception of the spitfire with p-foot mods.
