I'm ashamed to admit that I just discovered these reels. I bought my first two courtesy of eBay . They are a little banged up here and there but for twenty bucks a piece I figured why not?

I'll have to collect my Medals together for a group photo. I have representatives of 1492, 1494, 1494 1/2, 1495, 1495 1/2, and 1496 1/2. One thing I've noted during my collection of Medalists, there's not an ugly one in the bunch. Even the scabbed, scraped, and well worn members all have an admirable look to them.

I was going to put up a group shot of mine (1494, 1494 1/2, 1495, 1496, 1496 1/2 and 1498) until I saw Grassinglass's post.

This is a 1494 1/2DA Medalist I just picked up on ebay.I already had 2 1494 1/2AK versions but I wanted one made in the USA.Both AKs are in excellent condition so I think Ill have to sell one.Image

Nothing fancy here, though one of them was my first fly reel. Sometimes when I've had a few drinks I cruise the internet for medalists in good shape for under $30.

DA's, CJ's some AK's, they all hold line and work.

I recently received this circa 1930's 1494 with dual pawls, bronze spindle, and unfortunately (?) an undisclosed replacement anodized black reel foot. The frame seems to have original paint, but I suspected the spool face may have been repainted, though the arbor has the usual silk line varnish residue. I know that the paint of the earlier ones, and consequent wear, was inconsistent ( not including the earlier leaded finish).
It is has zero spool play and the drag is strong.

Now I at least have 1494 ringers with pawl and plate drives:

Shrimpman-Your 1494 reel foot may be from a late AK model.

Thanks for the suggestion! The foot is 1/8" shorter, very thin, and more radiused than the factory ones I've seen, plus it is straight , not angled at each end.

yes, that looks like the OnePfoot

These are a whole lot stronger than the original alloy feet, which had a tendency to break out the corners.

only made for a few months in 1935 (probably ended in court with Hardy)

The four Medalists in the lower corner are pre-'35 1494 and 1492 click-pawl, '36 1394, and 1937 1st patent drag 1494.

Which is why I didn't complain to the unaware seller—I know those weren't exactly free. :)
I would prefer the reel be all original, but maybe some day I will get a painted brass foot off a junker reel and sell the pfoot. It's too bad the Sal-Trout feet are pinned!

People have control over their choices, and this empty thread is a pretty good example of rash choices, which, when you think about it, may be the stuff the internet is made of.
Rash choices made by photobucket, and rash choices made by free photobucket subscribers.
Photobucket couldn't think their way out of an income dearth caused by ad blockers better than trying to scare subscribers into giving them money (and asking for stupid subscription prices - if they had required $12/yr from everybody all along, maybe given them a free trial first, would never have gotten there).
Scared subscribers, wanting to hurt photobucket, deleted their free accounts - they didn't hurt photobucket, they hurt themselves and us.

The good news, Tom has the time and Admin has the skill to make this upgrade to FFR and keep a great archive alive.
