Proud owner of a Orvis Presentation III and IV
Always admired the innovative design features of these (STH Airweight) reels

The Presentation EX III has a diameter of 3 1/4" and is 1 1/8" wide

The Presentation EX IV has a diameter of 3 3/8" and is 1 1/4" wide

tension knob is located by reel foot

springs are used for tension on click and pawls

Interesting spool release

Strung the III with a 5 weight can't wait to give it a spin

Any chance someone has the reel papers for these reels?

something that always impressed me about them was how they pop when you remove the spool from the roller bearing spindle. Tight tolerances.

That impresses me too, love to hear that.

I've also been drawn to the reverberation created by the tension springs - seems instrumental.
Just have their own unique sound.

Bulldog, do the springs in these reels hold up well?

I've never owned one, but I've also never heard a complaint.

I've seen these come up on eBay but haven't known enough to pursue them. They sure are nice looking reels!

Flyguy, I have the papers for the Presentation. I'll post them this evening when I get home from work.

Is the tension knob on yours hard to adjust. I have a Presentation IV that I picked up a few years back. It was a backup reel for someone and barely used. However the tensioner is hard to operate. I didn't know if it was me or the reel. Probably me! :rollin

I think they are a bit tight, I used some light oil which helped.

I would agree that the knob is a little on the difficult side. I don't use it often enough to have messed around with it but would think a drop of oil would loosen it up satisfactorily.

The papers for the Presentation will be posted in Reel Papers.

Thanks for the reel papers on this reel. I always wondered what the L and H stood for in regards of the drag. I can't wait to try this out tomorrow!

I'd enjoy seeing papers on this reel also. L/H, low high maybe? Although I don't see an obvious mechanical difference, possibly one spring is stouter than the other. I also wonder if, as shown, the pawls are set upside down. Usually the camming surface of the pawl above its slot is inward, closest to the pivot point of the camming arm as this position gives better mechanical advantage for outgoing resistance. However, if that is not a symmetrical set up, in which one side is for LHW and one for RHW, but is high/low sides, then the pawl would be flipped according to winding direction.

Well I see now that, thanks to Cofisher, this is covered in the latest (#115) post in the reel papers discussion. viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1366&start=100#p140127

L and H stand for light and heavy drag. If you look closely at the springs you will see one is heavier than the other. I think that the difficulty of adjusting the drag is the location of the adjustment screw. Being so close to the reel foot makes it hard to get good finger purchase on it. A good cleaning and oiling will help the problem immensely.

I love them and have several including those sold by STH, the company who made them for Orvis.

That's a cool reel!
Which blank are you building on? I absolutely love James' 3wt blanks.

A medium yellow glass 7'3" 3 piece true 3WT. Recently bought it directly from James. He is a great easy going guy. He helped me out with the guide spacing, selecting the hardware and given me a ton of tips about rod building.

I know it sounds silly but it does. Reminds me of playing an electric bass.
