I recently purchased this reel, a Browning Midas 4. It reminds me of the Martin MC series but the dual pawl is more like the Martin LM series. From the look of the reel it looks like it was made by Martin for sure. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I do have one problem with the reel. When I change the pawls to LHR the spool basically starts to free spool. I was baffled the first time it happened and removed the spool to try and see what was going on. This is a unused reel with really no signs of wear, just an FYI. Anyway, take a look and see what you think ...

The pawls are rocking up onto that slight flat corner of the pawl causing the free spool, but why? I think that flat spot is normal on the pawl. What is weird is that it does not do it when the pawls are set for RHR. Any ideas?

Martin USA. That Browning version is a form of the Trophy series reels as shown here: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=15909&p=106020&hilit=Martin+trophy#p106020

Probably you have them, but here are the instructions for the dual-pawl configuration. I wonder if it is simply a matter of lubrication between the camming arm and the bearing surface of the pawl. Sometimes the arm develops a slight burr that would have an effect if the pawl position were changed. Any burrs are easy to polish away. Looks like the mechanism is clean, but if it is dry, lubricate with a fine machine oil. Grease on the gear if you prefer.

your springs are compressed - look at the free play in your pawls
You should only need one pawl engaged.
Take the pawls out, remove the springs, and slightly stretch the springs.
Drop them in a pan and let them sit in your oven at 350oF for 15-20 minutes.
Put the pawls in and try one-at-a-time.
Do all the maintenance inside a shoebox, btw.

Then, throw the pawls away and eat the box? :lol

idea is to catch the spring when it gets away from you.
What are you drinking, Colston?

Gotta love a man with the twisted associational reasoning process that produced Colston's remark. It tells me that at some point, he and some buddies have prepared carp by the most renown baking recipe in which they are fastened to a plank, padded over with cow manure, buried in a pit of hot coals for a few hours, dug out, thrown away, and you eat the plank. It must have been a good meal, served with Old Duke, right Colston?

I didn't say I didn't want to drink with Colston. I'd like to fish with him, too.

Thanks for the tip bulldog, after I oil it I'll see if the problem remains then try your trick. Its funny, I have gone on a reel buying spree but still have not found time to work through some of these minor issues I'm finding, let alone clean any of the reels. I need to get some hot sauce and get to work one of these nights.
