At some point this sight had a classic reels forum section but it did not get great response. It seems like now there is a lot more talk about them and maybe one could be created again. I tend to swing over to clarks classic to get on the reel forum but most of the talk over there is of older "antique" reels and it seems that with the fiberglass rods we are looking at more fishing modern classics that may not have the huge $ associated with reel collecting.

I just picked up a Reddington CT, and I believe it's the nicest click-pawl I've ever handled.

There's 3 of these going on eBay right now.

Tom and I were talking about starting a reel page here. We'll shy away from Dingleys, and talk about Martins and such.
There actually used to be a whole Classic Fly Reels EZboard but it was taken over by popups and, ultimately, spyware viruses.

i think the forbes reels in the avon, and sandstone are modern classics. spring and pawl and very nicely machined. they also have that thistle bimetal reel. the aerial is nice too and very classical design. one of the smoothest reels i have ever seen.

I have been using Redington CT's in 2/3 and 3/4 sizes for several years, and agree with Bulldog 100%. Another favourite of mine is discontinued Ross Colorado.

Well, lets get a head start on the forum sub heading. The medalists are great and even better (Cheaper) in the DA for glass rods. I love the SA system reels or marquis by hardy for my glass rods. I also use the ross colorado reels and really like them. Love the lamsons, battenkills, and fenwick world class reels (old gold). I recently picked up a winston perfect for a great price and it is great with the new steffen rod I picked up.
Just some of the stuff I am using.

My favorite modern reel: Islander's IR Series. As nicely made a reel as you can buy. I especially like the simple and fool-proof drag settings. You can lock in 5 detents ... no guessing.

Barry,

I am a huge Islander fan myself, unfortunately I don't currently own one(always looking). I fish an Abel Creek with my little glass rods and an STH with my 5wts.

A friend of mine picked up a Reddington last year and when he showed it to me I thought as you Ron, as smooth a click/pawl as I have ever handled. He ribbed me about the price vs. my hardy lightweight of course. Do you know where they are made Ron?

They were made in Korea, like the rest of early Redington reels (both LA and non-LA).

Hind sight's 20/20. I recall the CTs were $50 when they were closed out. Seems the price has risen. I'm looking for the "next" CT and find myself wondering how that Airrite AR may be ... I still think the Japanese built SA System 1s are nice and have run across folk fishing the Climax Epic that like them. How are the Okuma Carinas?

here is the link to an absolute beauty. there is a less expensive version as well.

www.westslopefly.com/reel ... reelID=110

here is a link to the less expensive version.
www.westslopefly.com/reel ... ?reelID=73

the whole 300 series is gorgeous. each model is available in either aluminum or brass. you have to order it from him with a deposit. it can be ordered in left or right hand wind but you cannot convert yourself. the "cavous" reels are also very nice but somewhat small. here is that link.

this is the bronze version but it is available in brass, bronze, bymetal bronze and nickle silver, brass and nickle silver, and all nickle silver.

Gee, 13 posts and no one listed the late great CFO click pawl reels. The Sage 500 series are excellent.

More obscure were very well made CFO clones by CRI, originaly sold by Cortland I think.

Kineya's Cavous in bronze is the most beautiful fly reel ever, to my tastes. I picked one up for someone when I was in Japan and I could hardly bear to send it to him.

Vinnie,

That's harsh. You pay for the trip and you have to give the best souvenir to someone else!

I really like the Kineya 300A reels. I like my reels very light. The 300A series are elegant AND under 4 ounces (~100 g). If the Cavous was under 100 grams, I would be twitching to get one.

I wonder what would be the Kineya take on a reel like a Hardy Marquis multiplier?

I'll throw in another word on the Climax Epic. I had a 3/4 size as my first "good" reel and stupidly sold it off. That reel was the perfect little reel and I so wish I could find another. I do know that the Cortland factory on-line store still has this reel in the 7/8 size, but no longer have the smaller sizes.

When you all started talking about the Epic, it dawned on me it's discontinued. Seems like I just saw it in Marriotts catalogue. I checked/it's gone. I spotted the Okuma Carina and the Cortland Mosquito are still available. Either of those anything special? I recall when I had a Sci-Angler System I. That was a decent click-pawl and there was a shop in town that carried an Argus reel. Anyone run across that one?

look for these in any size that will fit your application.
even though the adjustable check generally looks like the Pflueger Supreme drag - which is a fine reel - the function of the drag on this reel is superior, and the fit and finish on this reel is a big step up - the anodizing is so hard it feels soapy.
It is a true jewel. This 3/4 size is perfect balance on my lighter glass 7' down to 6' (especially the 7' Axisco 6-pc. 3-wt.)

This reel fits my definition of a Modern Classic.
I think its because I've fished my Lamson LP3.5 with 3 spools in the salt for 22 years and there's not a mark on it.

Great reel for a full DT3, a short-belly WF6, or a Teeny sinker. (In fact, the spool dimensions are identical with the Reddington CT 3/4 above.)

Making this reel looks like an afterthought for Lamson. The spring and pawl is essentially the noise-maker on the LP reels. But it works fine and makes the sweetest sound of any reel - maybe better than the old Heddon Imperials.

My 7 ft. 3 wt. rods usually have the lightest Battenkill Bar Stock. 7.5" 4 wt. is usually a SA System 2L 5-6 (from '90s), which balances perfectly. A Lamson Radius will probably go on some shorter 4 wt. The 5'3" Fenglass gets an older Bean Steamlight model (now changed). Modern reel for the vintage 6 wt. rods (7" - 7.5") is usually a Gunnison 2, but the SA 2L does the job on some.

I have a few vintage reels, but for the most part just use whatever modern ones I have from graphite match ups.
