Did Ross ever manufacture a reel like this or does this represent a home-made alteration? Thanks and best regards.

Corcut,

Welcome to the Fiberglass Flyrodders!

That is an OLD Ross Reel. It looks like it has been through more than its share of fishing. I don't remember a cutaway frame like that OR the model name (Gunnison?). I think someone did the cutaway as a custom "improvement". The reel has a palming rim, so the only reason I can imagine they cut the frame was to reduce weight.

Skip it unless it sells really cheap. That reel has probably seen too much abuse.

It looks like a custom cut job to me. The edges look rough and unfinished. There may be other old Ross's to find over this one.

yes, that looks like a hacked-up older Gunnison - oh, excuse me, that's a "field modification".

It is a Gunnison Saltwater model that was made between the Ross s reels and the saltwater I believe. The cutouts are aftermarket. I would not go after that one.

I use a round GS-4 Gunnison Saltwater reel.
If you had some reason to want the lightest possible medium sized saltwater reel, this would be it.
I don't think the metal that was crudely removed here served much function. This is already a pretty light reel. Most glass saltwater rods are going to want a little more weight than this to balance near the cork, but I can imagine it being perfect for a saltwater graphite short rod like some of the spin rods some are experimenting with.
I won't be bidding not even my normal lowball.
But for fishing it's probably worth more than $25.
