I'm always curious about the many variants of Young reels over the years so I thought it'd be an interesting thread to see some reels that came from Redditch without the Young name on them.
This should take up a few pages quick - I figured I would start it with a few of these ...

A Young's Condex rebadged as an Allcock's 'Popular'

This Forbes 3 in. Aerial built from Young parts

Image

Image

and this Beaudex reinventing itself as an Orvis Battenkill

Image
Image

nevermind this Beaudex showing up as a Milwards Flymaster ...

This will be fun!

A late model Pattern 8 dressed up as an Allcock's Gilmour.

Image

And I'm pretty sure this is a Pattern 5 Called The "Marvel" Reel also from Allcock.

Image

And from recent history a pair of Sage 108M

Image

And Frank, I still have that brown Miward's ... thanks again!

These maybe way off the radar, not even Young reels but more in the "knock off" category.
Still they have Young influence all over them.
First a Shakespeare Beaulite, 3.5" trout reel.
Image

Image

This is a Diawa 706, for sure this is a knock off, still a nice working reel.
Image

Image

This one is a "reel" reach, but from some I've contacted across the pond they think it is Young built.
A 3 1/8" reel badged Pegley Davies. A very unique adjustable drag system.
Image

Image

Image

Image

Of course my favorites, Young 15A's. The two "black" one's are badged Allcock "The Marvel" reel.
The smaller one is badged for C Jeffries & Sons. First a 4'' reel.
Image
These are 3.5" and 3 1/8".
Image

These are the ones I have pictures of. Respectfully rvreclus

Great idea. This promises to be one of the best threads ever. We could even try to group them; for instance, we have the 1500 series Sage version above, and will soon see the LL Bean and Daiwa versions I hope. When it's full, we could do the same with several other makers. Shakespeare Speedex:

Speedex with a descendant in conventional wind form, the Young 1525 (same reel the Sages were based on)

I have a Young-made Orvis Battenkill Lightweight as well, which I think is the nicest looking reel that Orvis offered.

I have just acquired one of these reels (along with a couple of Young's) from an elderly gentleman here in New Zealand. Mine is missing the line guard (a common "take off" here in NZ) and the foot has been replaced due to a fall breakage of the original.

RV - no knock off at all but the last gasp of the Beaudex after Young was swallowed up by Shakespeare. Like whrlpool's Speedex a few posts above - all in the family.

I use a lot of conventional spool reels, but there are times I want a palming rim. A nice thing about the "Beau" series Shakespeare models is they retain the great adjustable click style of the classic Youngs (many of which were also Beusomething) but because this was relatively late in that series production, they are much easier to find with a palming rim spool. I will guarantee that Bulldog won't trade me his even later Worcestershire above for one of my Speedae, and I don't blame him. If only yet another successful marketer (Orvis, for example, instead of their acquiring BFR) had continued to source from and eventually buy JW Young, maybe we'd have a full range still available today. To me they are a much greater loss than any changes or closure of any other reel maker. I hope somebody will put a list of the Beau comparable names in Young and Shakespeare form; I just don't know them well enough to do it off the top of my head and would have to research the many other great Young threads here. Rvreclus Daiwa was a near copy (Daiwa-Seiko, Japan, maker) of a Hardy model and I always thought better quality; that will have to go in another thread. I am suffering badly over not having a B ... Kill lightweight, also, one of the few Orvis reels that ever appealed to me for exactly the reasons stated above. There's one I could live a long life with and never miss a palming rim. Alas, poor me, no one would take a Speedex for one of those either (a multiplier, but of the same design, mechanical and manufacture type).

Here's a 3-1/8" Farlows silent check which I'm thinking is based on a Pattern 14A.

First of all, a group of Pattern 1As:

Image

Image

- from left to tight, a 2 1/4" marked for Allcock's, then a 2 1/2" marked for Albert Smith of Redditch, and a 3" marked for A E Rudge & Sons of Unity Works Redditch.

And a 3" Milbro:

Image

Image

- though it started out as an Ogden Smith Flyos. You can just about see part of the Ogden Smith name and "London" underneath the Milbro stiker:

Image

And a Pegley-Davis casting reel - "The Competitor" (similar to the Ogden Smith Spinos).

Image

Image

And finally (for the time being anyway), a black Aerial. You won't see many of these. Image

Image
Image
Regards,

Doc

That's for sure Doc - didn't even know one existed. So what is the story behind that black Aerial anyways?

Rummaged around in my boxes for looking for reels to post in this thread. Found this rarely seen reel. Here's one for you Orvis guys. An Orvis Battenkill multiplier, a Young made reel of unique design. I'm not sure of the name Young gave this reel, hopefully Bulldog can help. I think he posted a pics of a reel like this but it was a "Night Hawk", or something like that. Hope bulldog chimes in with the info.

You beat me to it. Here's another view of the Battenkill multiplier (alongside a Beaudex). A real beast for sure - but with an interesting clutch design built into the drag. You're close RV - the Shakespeare/Young venture called theirs the FishHawk.

It didn't exist. It's repaired and re-anodised.

This one is a 3-1/2" Pattern 5 button latch stamped for "W. H. Hamlin - Angler's Depot - Cheltenham"

I really like these old button latch reels - I was using a smaller 3" version up in BC for Kamloops trout. To make a long story short, I should have taken the bigger one! Image
