Very close connection between Young, Daiwa and Tiemco in the 1990s.
When Young closed the line in 2002, all the engineered-composite reels closed out in Japan with Tiemco.
These are really great reels if you can find them. Don't confuse with cheap graphite.
Young thought they could save their market with $100 reel, but no one would buy composite.
They're worth more than their original price, both in value and function.

huh, didn't know about the Tiemco involvement..
Agree, these later Youngs are also terrific, like them a lot..

here's mine in the Boundary Waters with a lake trout.. trolling a heavy Clouser off a 7wt sinktip with all the line out, backpaddling against the wind for a slow slow drift..

I think that covers all the materials - wood gunnels on a Kevlar boat, composite reel on a glass rod, with a carbon fiber paddle ;-)

Are there specific models with the stripping guides for Left Hand Retrieve? I see only RHW Style. I know the Beaudex has a ambidextrous guide. Thanks.

Certainly not all of them Beaudex’s.

Early postwar Allcocks Marvel, converted to LHW by TLC (+added black-anodized YoungPfoot)

btw, this is a dedicated show-and-tell thread, guys.
I'll answer the reversible Pridex and Beaudex appeared in 1958 - all the reels before then were made RHW, but can be converted to LHW with artful trial and error, or experienced-based science. Tuning pawl springs is addressed in Mechanical Bits, which was intended to present useful repair examples.

I looked for a long time for a Young-made Battenkill to pair with my Orvis Battenkill rod. Finally gave up and bought a Beaudex. It's a great reel; couldn't find an extra spool, so I bought another reel.

Tight Lines- Ken

we gotta get you guys taking oblique photos to show the substance of a reel - instead of plan photos - we all know reels are round.
One of my all-time favorites shows how the postwar -Exes were derived from the prewar Pattern 8

Also not bad-mouthing Young reels on the Young reel praise thread.
If you don't like the spring tuning on your reel, tune it.

Here's the rare marque for mid-late 60s, Allcocks Argus - a few of these were even made with panic-button spool drag on the backplate.
When Shakespeare took over both companies, they began listing Young-marked models in Allcocks Angler's Guide, and eliminated separate Allcocks model names and flair.

That seems like a practical idea that would be very inexpensive to add to reels. I wonder why it wasn't more popular? I don't know if it's as functional as it sounds, but it seems like a catchy feature I would have been drawn to. :)

Gents,
Can’t find it but wasn’t there mention about a JW Young style reel being manufactured under a different name these days? I am having trouble finding it.
Any help most appreciated as always.
Thanks

Cyguy, you may be thinking of JAF (J Austin Forbes). Try a forum search it may be the name you’re looking for.

Young hasn't made a fly reel since Dec 2002. However, JAF had inventory of the machined parts and was assembling reels here for almost another 10 years.

JAF also brought home many new innovations that Young either put on the market for a short time, or never put on the market under their name, such as the Aerial and Thistle.

While this old thread is up to the surface again, I have a doubt. Last year I acquired a couple of Pridex reels and was pleasantly surprised at how smooth the click mechanism feels. Could one reasonably expect the same smoothness in a Pattern 1?

PampasPete, you'll find the prewar check to be smoother than the postwar check, though less versatile in that they cannot be made reversible from RHW.
You may find conical wear of white metal bushings on hard-use thumbscrew reels, solved by addition of latch plate.
It's also rare to find prewar reels with foot length less than 2-5/8", though they made some brass feet 2-1/2" and 2-3/8"

An example still retaining much of the original lampblack topcoat, and certainly without bushing wear.

I have 2 post-war Young-made Orvis Battenkills...both fished hard and show it, but functional.

My favorite is a Flyweight with a 3 wt floater on it, repaired by a fishing buddy who happens to be a machinist. The clicker was worn, chipped and he somehow fixed it.

The other has a spare spool , very worn from fishing Colorado and the Madison River in the Park for fall browns for many, many years. Both gifts from fishing mentors and friends who are no longer with us.

I fish the larger Battenkill a lot on local lakes, floating 7 wt bass line and sink-tip line on spare spool...RH retrieve but works fine and I really enjoy fishing both lines with 6,7 glass rods

Another odd shot of the Shakespeare President - compare the open frame to that Duchess

I had a Shakespeare President..received from one friend, given to another, I kind of regret not keeping the reel.

Said "Made in Japan" then finished ...by Young?....in England. A magnesium alloy, according to some research.

A truly beautiful reel, bright silver finish

Re Daiwa 800 reels (made by Young)

I may well be mistaken but I´ve always assumed that the last digits denote the recommended line weight, ie that 809 is intended for #9 lines etc. Can anyone correct me?
