What started as a conversation with Bulldog about "Look two Valdex's are on eBay right now" ... ended with me selling two rods and three reels to help finance a bid/win on the nicer of the two Valdex's. I picked it up from the Post Office yesterday and tonight I was able to give it the "treatment" with a bath, cleaning, and Hot Sauce application.

I am not 100% happy with the springs ... and may send it off to Bulldog for the final tweaking. I don't want to end up breaking one ... or working on it ... and still not getting it right.

Ron ... do I need to have both pawl engaged? Beautiful reel. I am really surprised you let two of those go.

Joao ... I can't wait to fish this reel. I am sure that it is going to photograph great on the water.

where's your musical sense of humor?

No, you should have one pawl engaged.

Cameron, you have a great reel there in Much Better than average condition. It will look amazing on a glass rod.

If you want to send it over, it won't take me much to tune the pawl springs (and I have a half-dozen new spare springs).

I had that mint reel around for a couple of years and ended up trading it for this one:

Is there a source for parts for these reels? I just bought a Valdex that is missing the spool retainer and clip ... I figured it was still worth the money ...

I have a friend that's looking for the same part - I sent him to Garry Mills in the UK - if he is successful, I'll let you know.

Bud I saw that reel and thought about bidding on it but passed figuring the missing part will be difficult to locate. I hope you have luck in finding it as they are cool reels. Maybe someday ...

Hi Cameron,
That is for sure one super pretty Young. Having more youngs than I care to admit too, I must say I really do like it. Guess Ive been spending far to much time collecting the Garcia Series, the Multiplier Series and just plain I like the Pridex and Beaudex series for fishing, but yours definately will have my eyes open for an equally nice one. How is the drag working? I know you know Ron well enough to send it over if your having a weak drag problem, he did wonders on the two reels I have he worked on. Plus I learned alot once I received them, about tweeking the springs. Ive been applying that to quite a few Young clones lately.
Great reel, I saw the pictures on your rod as well, it really is a classic stricking pairing.
Richard

Bud ... what was the eBay auction number on that one? I missed following it. I certainly hope that you can find a release cap. My biggest fear in using my Valdex was having the release cap drop into the drink while fishing. I found myself checking it to make sure it was tight on the reel about every ten to twenty minutes.

Richard ... I sent the Valdex to Ron for spring tweaking ... and it is feeling very nice now.

The Valdex really is a sexy reel ... and by far my favorite in the collection so far.

Well ... I'll make an admission here ... I pushed Ron to set the drag light ... but today I engaged both pawls ... and it is REALLY perfect. One pawl ... maybe a bit light.

We'll find out at "Christmas Clave".

Your beautiful reel with the ivory handle and the agate line guide shows up in every other thread in this forum, never with any identity information, and it's making me crazy! Here it is, again. Is it an Ogden Smith Exchequer?

It wouldn't be authentic, but if a guy just wanted to fish with the reel, couldn't you find a circlip to retain the spool and then fabricate a simple cap--at least until the part was located?

Hi bigskybum, yes, that is an OS Exchequer, c. 1937-39 (made by JW Young and dated by the patent and appearance of the sliding agate line guard)
Image
take the ad copy with much salt.
I have an earlier OS Exchequer which is a Dingley perfect.

Even though I fish this reel, it is the pinnacle of my collection - but it's almost embarrassing to describe how I acquired the reel through break-even-cost upgrades starting with a $65 Valdex over 4 years of collecting/trading. The handle, btw, is not ivory, but is ernoid - a polymer made from milk.

There is a little more detail on the reel on this thread on another board:

Thanks for the story behind that Ogden Smith reel - quite an amazing specimen, with an interesting history to boot. It's great that you've decided to line it up and fish it, finally giving it a chance to serve its intended purpose after waiting all those years. It couldn't be in better hands.

The little Valdex arrived from England ... missing the release cap and spring as advertised. Aside from that it is in good shape but needs cleaning up. Ron ... is the finish on these Young reels safe to use the vinegar solution? I am talking about the Beaudex as well as the Valdex.

hi Bud - read through the instructions and treat it as a painted reel - no more than a half-hour in the vinegar, and keep the temperature lukewarm.
