Just grabbed this guy off FB marketplace. Almost new! It says it’s for 4/5, but this is about the same size as my CFO 123, and will be a great fit on my CGR 2wt!

Of course the reel is not that old - the plastic latch cover was used first in the late 40s.

I don’t doubt that. The license was thumb tacked into the box lid. My grandfather had the wooden box in his belongings, half fish gear and half drill taps. Wonder what he was doing at the rail road ;

Marquis 7 is my favorite. If a medalist is considered the 1495 for a budget option. Always like to upsize.

My DL Robichaud baby trout C&P is by far my favorite trout reel. The only problem is, I wish I had purchased more of his reels... and some Peerless reels.

Came across this new click pawl on LL Bean's website. Double L Standard Arbor fly reel. Lightweight (3.85 oz) only available in one size, a 3/4 wt (4 wt has room for 70 yds of backing), anodized aluminum and compact size, color is called moss, listing for $110. They said they are not planning on offering any other sizes. Didn't see any other references to it on this forum.

I just picked up a couple of inexpensive reels, a South Bend 1133 and a Hardy Featherweight clone. Haven't used them yet as the season opens in about 4 weeks, but I love the solid workmanship and of course the sound on both. I had to restore the 1133 and finished it with a matte black finish.

So after not buying any vintage reels for awhile I decided I needed one more, (at least) salmon sized reel to pair up with a rod that I inherited. I went looking recently and found this unique Young's 10B. Stamped for Weber Lifelike Fly Co. Somewhat rare in that their is no ball bearings. What we call a eunuch. Several features that I believe point to this being a reels from the 20s is the barrel shaped, double knurled tension adjustment, the mechanism inside for the movement of the spring, and the row of knurling on the outside rim of the reel.

I have about a dozen of these 10B patterns and this is the first one with all of these features on the same reel. Some one in the past has filed the foot down to modern length. Makes it easy to mount for me.
It's greased up and will be lined and on the water tomorrow!

I've been on a kick lately to explore the various Medalist clones made by Olympic in Japan. This Olympic 450 is a very nice example of a well made, no-frills click and pawl reel.

I want to love it more than I do, but I find that these type of reels annoy me because they let line out when I don't want them to. Overall though, this is far superior to the Martin Caddis Creek that is currently sold and very similar conceptually.

Thanks for showing. You can see why the Daiwa let's line out when you don't want it to. The check is minimal to begin with and now significantly worn, to judge by the shape of the teeth and the pawl. Too much gummed up lube and grit worked it right over. But it might not have been very stout to begin with. Checks like that were often intended to be just enough to prevent over-run when stripping line--at a time when landing fish by hand stripping line was all that was intended when such reels were used. They were/are fine for that purpose, as well as inexpensive and easily replaced. In conjunction with a fiberglass rod, the rod's varying flex plays a bigger part than the reel alone to vary outgoing tension. Still, just as you say, many will spin like the dickens if pulled at hard.

My old mentor would have fit over that grease, he swore that grease wore reels out by holding unseen grit. He convinced me to use creek water as lube and 47 years later the old Medalists still work. But having seen so many lube instructions over recent years I wonder if ...
I've been kinda collecting and using Sal Trout reels for a couple of years and for sure the eBay reels that carried lots of grease had more wear than the dry ones did, it may be that they were greased so heavy because they were used hard, or maybe Jean was right. Until I got the first Sal Trout I'd never really liked or used spring and pawl reels, but that first one made me buy several more and I use them a lot, without grease. My objection to petroleum lubes has always been fear of line and leader damage, but I've no proof of that danger either, hmm.

First run 3” Hardy Princess. As advertised, the blue finish is all gone. But I love the blue handle and mechanically it’s perfect.

Recent acquisition, doesn’t look like it was ever used. Something about simple I like.

I have always been a fan of the martin reels. They have treated me well! I currently have an MG3 on my 3wt butterstick and I have multiple MG7s on all of my mid weight rods. They are great reels for the money and made to be fished
