Even better shown fishing, with fish. Plus the SA system 'glass, right? A symmetrical/reversible design, For most of this reel's production/sales period, they were default provided RHW, correct? I see this one is LHW. Were they delivered that way, or did you swap it? Just a point of interest that reflects changing preferences, LHW having become predominant, and therefore the delivery default on most reels, in the last 10 to 15 years.

I've got a few Hardy's, a bushel of Young's, and a passel of blue collar American reels, one from New Zealand and a few from the Orient.
Can't say what it is that attracts me to buy certain reels, but I know one when I see it.

Here is a single click pawl reel from A.B. Urfabriken, (ABU?). Looks to be a baked enamel finish and a screw in the end of the spindle for run out adjusment. A fine reel that really should have had a leaded type finish to do it justice. I haven't done any research on it yet but it is the first one I've seen ... just had to have it.

VERY cool record reel. I have a bunch of Record spinning reels my dad gave me. He said they'd last forever and i believe him.
Like to find one of them to complete a fly/spin Record display.

I thought that reel looked familiar! I had to pull it off the rod and and shoot it. I believe this is an earlier version of that one, 3-1/2" and branded for Allcocks as The Gilmour. Still a pretty tight reel and one of my favorites to use for trout.
It brought many nice Searun Cutts to hand weekend before last.

Here's one that doesn't seem to get much respect. Nice clean simple lines and it has a nice stiff payout that I'd be comfortable with using for Steelhead.

I would fully endorse these reels , especially for the cost conscience angler, All Sharpes of Aberdeens reels are usually great buys for the money

Speyrod,

Welcome to the Fiberglass Flyrodders! Somehow I missed your first post. It's nice to have visitors from Clark's.

These models are hardly rare, but they are my favorite spring & pawl reels. My CFO III is at least 25 years old, has never been repaired and keeps going strong. It's my favorite 4-weight reel. The Abel is a TR3, no longer available. For me, it's the perfect 6-weight reel.

CFOs are hard to beat and Abels are top shelf for sure. I have a few of each myself. I was interested in Joe Cornwall's comments in Flyfish Ohio about the Bass Pro Classic Ultralite reels. They look like an Abel TR0 and for $109.00 ... a bargain.

34 pages and so much knowledge and photos. You would have thought we would have run out of clickers by now.

I am curious as to what you guys use for larger fish, such as steelhead. I'm looking for something to balance out an old 8 1/2 glass rod (7/8wt.) ... right now I just use a medalist RC but would like a click/pawl.

Clarkman, there are allot of worthy reels out there for steelhead and salmon. I favor the SA system/Hardy marquis and you can pick up a system 9, which is the same reel as the marquis 10, for a pretty good price still and it will work great. Also the other hardy's in the 3 3/4 like the st george if you reel right hand, don't want the palming rim, and have more money to burn. Young makes some reels that you can pick up cheaper than the hardys and they would work well also.

4" Youngs would be good reels for steelhead, including Beaudex and Landex.

Thanks for the ideas.

I just love going into my local fly shop and seeing them cringe when I tell them what setup I'm fishing that day (these guys live and die by spey & swung flies & always have the latest in technological advances).

that should do the job nicely - and keep them cringing at the fly shop.

You got a good buy on that one, and it's a good choice. You have a "classic" blue collar pair in the Pflueger friction (disc) drag and the Martin USA click. Together these two companies probably represent the best range of USA made fly reels for everyman in the heydey of the bamboo and fiberglass era, and they are just as useful today as ever. The Martin doesn't have the stoutest click resistance compared with some of the heavy duty Young click reels, but bring it on with the palming rim. And then start another thread with a photo of the outfit and the first good fish that made the click sing.

That is a question I don't have an answer for and am kind of curious about myself. I've read other posts concerning vintage reels branded with a retailer's name but thought to possibly be made by Sharpes. That would lead me to believe that Sharpes did some of their own manufacturing, but I haven't taken the time to research it at all ... perhaps the next time I get laid off.

If you are comfortable handling large strong fish without a disc drag or palming rim, a 3-1/2" or 3-3/4" Medium Width Beaudex/Landex would be plenty of reel for the line and enough #20 backing. These are what I now use on my 10'-8wt and 6wt spey in graphite. If you can only get one, 3-3/4" is the one I would get.

I haven't caught a ton of steelhead, but enough to know what I like in a reel. Even with my Pflueger or my other reels with a disc drag, I usually end up setting the drag pretty loose (just enough to keep it from over-running) and palming the reel anyway. The one's I've lost usually have something to do with having the drag set too tight.

I'm sure I'll be looking into youngs reels at some point since they are typically pretty reasonable in price.

I just got the Martin in yesterday, and am heading out tomorrow, so hopefully there will be something to share later ...
