middlemac had a great idea- how about a thread with our reel papers. Great! I'll start with one I have ready

Martin SS

here's the reel

potterpoole - Dean - came up with the idea to add model number keywords to this thread, making it easier to search for specific papers. I made a deal with him that I would edit the posts if he did the footwork. So here we go. Thanks to Dean

Grades are UK silk lines, where a Grade 3 is about a 6/7 in modern AFTMA equivalent

the paper accompanied this reel, which is a 1959 version with the reversible (symmetric) check and the cone-shaped latch plate

Terrific start BD, will follow with a few of my own shortly. Box papers provide the ultimate baseline.

I have a feeling this thread could grow quickly. :eek

Hope this will be more than Martins and Youngs, but here are a couple more that show little variations over the years. An MG series, shown with an MG 7 (1970s I think) with the manual on especially high grade bond paper. Then a very similar manual for the later MG SS series reels, shown with an MG 7 SS , probably quite late for those since the reel it came with is black rather than the long-running battleship gray. I won't put up others unless somebody asks, but I probably have papers for the machined LM and MZ/Strata series reels and several others. I'd like to see one for any of the large disc drag Martins (the 70 or its variants in Martin or other brands). Also, somebody bought a late '70s Martin catalog on Ebay recently. If it was a reader of this site, I'd love to see some pages.

Here's the Martin '79 catalog for whrlpool. These are my first image posts so they're a bit large and the quality varies, I'll work on my editing.

I'll just post the conventional click-pawl and disc drag reels from the catalog, not the automatics, rods etc. It's a forty-page catalog so if someone is looking for a specific item, PM me and I'll post if I can.

If placement in the catalog means anything, Martin was really pushing the new MG series and multipliers in '79, which are on the first few pages- the old tuna can series (Models 60-66) don't appear until page 9, just before the automatics.

Everyone has their preferences but for me, this period was Martin's zenith in terms of what I prefer about their vintage reels.

(Now, if I could only afford that 60's-era Martin catalog currently on eBay ... )

And here's a box paper for a Tuffy Model 64, the only paper I own that was in Martin's "letterhead" format and not the smaller folded type:

Martin catalog M 72, M 68, M 67A, MG-3, MG-7, blue chip model 70, blue chip model 71, M 60, M 61, model 62, model 63, model 64, model 65, model 66 model 67.

Looking at Ron's first post on the thread and at my own Martins, I'm reminded that the 67SS came in blackwall, whitewall and double-whitewall "tires" (spools), Yes? :rollin

Thanks for the Ross, Young, & Thompson papers! Fantastic. And generally a whole lot more colorful and eye-catching than the Martin papers ... What was with the Martin Company's graphics department- color-blind, or just cheap? :rollin

Still, whrlpool asked for a Martin 70's disc drag box paper. Here's the only one I have, which is really a folded ad for a "Fly-Safe" fly box that came with various reel models, but which does feature a No. 70 as one of the "Headache Cures for Fishermen" ...

Ron aka Bulldog ...

Thanks for the Martin 67SS papers.

I received my Martin in the mail today, set up for right hand retrieve. Using your posting I was able to convert it to LHW.

And ... using your cleaning and lube posting, both my (new to me) Martin 67SS and Bronson Royalist are probably in better shape today than since they were made!

Can't wait to line the Martin and mount it on my Fenwick FF806. The Bronson is already on my FF755.

Thanks.

David

I've had some nice PM comments and emails about how great it's been to see box and catalog papers- some for the first time- by folks who own the gear that didn't include the papers.

Let's see if we can get some more:

Airex
Bronson
Hardy
Marryat
Pfleuger
South Bend and

I loved the othr stuff here--Ross, Thompson, and pages of the Martin catalog. I didn't put in any Pflueger because I figured everybody had that. If noboby gets them up in he next few days, I have at least two from the '60s and will dig them out and post.

The Orvis/Martin is great, and also gives an indication of the transitional years when LHW started to prevail over RHW. Notice that at the time Orvis marketed the Martin-made reels, RHW was still the default. My Martin-made LL Bean "angler" reel, about like the Green Mountain, was also delivered RHW; I bought it in the late '80s. Nowadays Beans delivers fly reels LHW unless RHW is requested.

The one thing I've learned after spending a lot of time trying to learn about Orvis reels ... when you get done you will be an expert on a lot of fine reel manufacturers through the ages.

Someone wanted Pflueger. These are both from the RHW to LHW convertible era, Akron production. In the side by side photos, on the left, paper from a reel I bought new about 1963. On the right, a slightly later Akron reel as they transitioned to three-rivet spools. Actually, the papers are quite similiar, and both old enough to list lines by the old letter designations. You can follow both sheets all the way through in the photos. The original brochure type is small to begin with, so not sure I can get these photos legible no matter how sized, so moderator, delete or resize if they foul up the page.

Lest we miss any of the lowly on-off click Martins, sheets on the 60-65 are shown on the "Martin 63" thread, as is a 67 sheet. Note that the 60 is RHW only, not because of the click set-up, but because its "tuna can" body (I love bulldog's engineering jargon) has only one cut-out and line guard.
p099.ezboard.com/ffibergl ... D=71.topic

And since I am rummaging photos for reel papers--this isn't a fly reel, so the moderator, whose judgment I fully respect and defer to, may delete it, but I think it will be interesting. A "thread-line" aka spinning reel, probably the finest of its time. If Hardy sold this reel, they would have called it "The Kingfisher." I purchased this Alcedo Micron new about 1970 from a then-new outfit called Cabela's and fished the bejeebers out of it for about 35 years. I photographed it with box and owner's info just before selling it--still in sound fishing condition--about a year ago.

Hi Ron, hay I have that exact same reel, the silver gray one, mine is a narrow 3inch model, but looks exactly like yours, how can you tell when they were made? I would love to know more about the little reel I have, its really sweet, and it seems few 3inch Beaudex reels show up on eBay in really nice condition. Yours looks a little better than mine, but only a little, I have it set up with a WF5F with a little backing and its a really fun reel.

Thanks to Ron and to all contributors for the ongoing contributions to this post.

If you've enjoyed viewing it and haven't yet posted your favorite reel papers, consider taking a few minutes to do so- we're really finding it interesting out here.

Wonderful current listing on eBay showing sample pages of a 1904 Illion NY Martin catalog. For anyone interested in buying, or just to view and admire.

and lastly, the magnesium Ryobi MG Series

I'll have a search around to see if I've got any more, but I think all the others are spinning reels or more modern fly reels.
