Did a small writeup on those a few days ago for Cameron of TFM and would like to share it for the forum...

more pics at the end...

As a custom rod-builder i´m always looking out for the perfect combination of aesthetically pleasing rod and reel combinations, and as a fan of classy looking rod concepts, not really vintage, but kind of pure, subtle ones, i stumbled across the Tiemco Oracle Vintage Baby Trout reels.

As Tiemco is foremost known for their hooks and maybe tippets, they never crossed my way in terms of fly-reels before. The more i was exited to see their range of classy looking vintage click & pawl reels in my preferred sizing from 2 7/8“ – 3“…

As the Japanese product design and product quality caught my attention on other occasions before, i ordered a first batch to check if they meet my expectations.

One week later i held the baby trout model in the non-perforated spool combi-color in hands and i was stunned about the clean, perfectly machined and well packed reel with the perfect weight and size to fit on a 2-4wt rod.

There are two models (baby & baby trout) and two types of spool available: NP (Non Perforation) without holes and DP (Double Perforation) with 2 rows of holes in the spool. There are three types of color combinations: solid silver, solid gray and gray body + silver spool combination so you can choose by coordination with your rod.

The Oracle baby trout has an outer diameter of 75 mm (3“) and is almost the same size as CFO III and is ideal for DT 3 F to DT 4 F - DT3F + 50m, DT4F + 20m (20lb). It weights 92 gram, spool width is 18mm.

The smaller baby is 72 mm (2 7/8“) in outer diameter almost the same size as CFO 123 ideal for DT 2 F to DT 3 F. Weight is 91gram, spool width measures 16mm with a capacity of DT 2 F + 50 m. DT 3 F + 25 m (20 lb).

The clicker mechanism is solid and works properly, no plastics at all. It has a slightly louder sound whilst releasing line than in retrieve mode whilst using it left-handed. As it is a two way clicker, you do not need to change or switch the pawl to prepare it for right-handed use.

For everyone who likes clean and solid reel work with a vintage touch, so this is a reel which will make you happy!

Thanks for your interest!

Cheers

Marc

Yep!

I've been a fan for a while, and own several.

They are very akin to a Hardy St. George, in my view.
And as you've described, operation tolerances are as fine as any reel out there.

I think the current models offered new for sale are a bit of a "re-boot"?
With the original production ceasing for a few years around 2016-2017...

perfect - thanks - that's a good spring design - could put a good cam in there, also, to make it adjustable.

So I had a larger sized oracle i purchased here. I thought it was a high quality reel, the issue I had was that sometimes the line would get caught in between the reel frame and the spool so I ended up getting rid of mine. I cant remember if mine had a full cage or not. I think a nickel silver line guard like on a hardy lightweight or cfo would be an improvement for that reason a (where the line sometimes got caught was where the line guard would be). It could probably be solved by better line management as well.

I caught some decent trout on that reel and it is loud for sure. Louder than a cfo or sage 500 series for sure.

Nice to see a reel with classic good looks and not looking like the rim of some exotic car.

Does anybody know if there is a connection between Tiemco and the Approach Genesis reels? I have the Genesis, and the first time I saw the Vintage Oracle non-perforated model, I thought they looked virtually identical, except that I have never seen any of the Oracles in bright orange like mine, or any of the other bright colors the Approach reels came in. I remembered the Genesis was built in Taiwan (I think) and so are many of the Tiemco products.

I like the frame-less English style design but a "Baby" size designation should be reserved for reels less than 2 3/4" in diameter. A 3" reel is for rods 7 1/2' or longer.

Just me, but I do like palming rims. A preference -- bias?-- that turned me away from Pfluegers to SA System 1s many yeas ago.

Great reels, I have the baby trout and it balances my 3wt Japanese glass perfectly. Really classy, well built reels. Amazon has one for sale now at a great price and free shipping.

I'm having trouble find where I can purchase one. Where can I find them? I would like one to match my Kabuto rod.

The “Baby” size (2 7/8”) seems to be available on Amazon to USA buyers. I’ve been looking for the “Baby Trout” size (3”) and can’t find them available in the USA. If anyone who is import-savvy wants to bring in a batch, looks like there are at least two of us who are interested!

The one on Amazon is only in brown. I was hoping for the grey ones. Also, in 3".
