Hi there. I’m building an Iconoglass 8’ 5wt and am wondering for myself and maybe others out there what fly lines you’ve found to be good with this blank. Thanks!

I’ve built two NFC glass blanks so far. Love them both... Likely looking to add another to my collection.... I believe the blanks are on sale currently if anyone is interested

Look at the NFC facebook post Oct. 4th.
"Dear Rod Builders,Please be aware that NorthForkComposites.com is able to process orders to the US, Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. If you attempt to purchase blanks outside of these locations you will get an error. We work with a few exclusive partners around the world:EU (France, Spain, UK, Germany, Italy, Portugal/Hungary) - they have a website listed in France

I don't want to change the nature of this thread, but if anyone has already gone to the trouble of collecting CCS data (ERN and AA) for these Iconoglass blanks I'd appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks,
Jeff

"Can anyone tell me a good way of contacting NFC please, i'm in the uk and can't order online and want to see if they will ship to me, they don't seem to reply to email or FB, i'd rather not waste money calling if possible, tempted to give up on them but the blanks do sound a good deal".

Hi Arron. I will send you a PM with direct email contact with staff there. They were super helpful in assisting with ordering and shipping two Iconoclass blanks. Since I used my own FedEx account, they were willing to ship out next day. Got them quickly and well packaged.

Keep trying via email. They might be having staffing issues. I never had an issue a number of months ago when I ordered mine, but I've heard varied stories. I just got my 10wt built and it's so worth it. It's an absolutely fantastic rod.

Looking at getting a few blanks in 5/8

How have they been fishing from a user’s perspective

So far, I've only had my 10wt out on the water once. I absolutely love it. It's pretty fast for glass with loads of power deep in the butt. I had no problem throwing my 400gr musky lines with it and flies up to bulky 10" out to 60' (most of my actual fishing is 30-50' & I didn't REALLY push it). I do have some larger stuff in the box, but it rarely gets fished, so I didn't try any of that stuff out. It's got plenty of power through the blank as well so that when I'm doing my figure 8, it doesn't collapse (an issue I've had with several graphite rods including one well-known super high-end model). I came really close to getting a fish on it, but alas, it wasn't meant to be.

I also ordered the 8wt blank, but it's not built out yet, but initial impressions are that it's similar to the Epic 888, but with a little bit more power in the butt. It's quite a bit more powerful than my Steffen 7/8, but it will also be a bit heavier. It'll be easier to tell though once it's fully built.

Cheers!

Jason,

I would really like to see pictures when you can of the birch seat. I have always loved birch. Good luck on the project.

I am the happy owner of a new Graywolf North Fork Iconoglass 7'6" 4wt. Shane Gray is a true artist. This one is made from the clear NFC Iconoglass zentron glass blank.
I fished it from my kayak and had a blast catching winter bass.

Super light and responsive. I’d call it medium fast action. Easy to shoot 20-30 foot casts with tight loops. Wonderful flex when fighting fish to the net. Wood insert is buckeye burl, hardware by Lemke, Snake guides and a gorgeous Struble agate stripping guide. May be my favorite grip of all my rods. It is cross between a half wells / powell style for a one-of-a-kind, incredibly comfortable and easy to control with wet cold hands.

Great photos, I’m glad to see someone is still able to get out on water that isn’t becoming covered in ice!

I ordered a 5 weight natural and an 8 weight green yesterday morning. Both blanks shipped within 5 hours of the order. Now we’ll see how long they take to get here. If USPS delivers them by March I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Vdub,
I ordered 3 Iconoglass blanks around mid December and they arrived within a week. No complaints. $290 total. $75 per blank, $10 per blank for excise tax and $35 for shipping. Seemed like good deal to me for domestic blanks. I have a feeling this run is dwindling cuz they showed the green in the 5 and 4 wt and then they didn't.
Two 5 wts in gray and cyan for wedding gifts and a 4 wt gray for me. Beautiful blanks. Workmanship around the ferrules is outstanding.

Glad to hear you’re happy with the blanks. We’re in the same boat, I’m building the 5 weight as a prize rod for a sportsman’s club and keeping the 8 to use as a mousing rod.

I’d love to see pics of the 5 and 8 when you get them built.

They’re in the queue. Finishing up a couple other projects and then I’ll make some progress on the NFC builds. My plan is to finish them up before spring fishing begins . . . but we’ll see.

For what it is worth. I recently purchased a 5wt 8' Northfork Iconoglass from Graywolf. Beautiful rod and the best full wells grip on the planet. I fish mostly smaller streams and this rod is sheer perfection for dry flies. If I do my job the rod presents absolutely text book presentation. Lighter than my Kabuto 5wt, and just a tad bit faster. Every rod has its own personality and we mesh together like a fine symphony on the streams we fish together.

After eying NFC blanks since this thread started a few years ago, I finally ordered a gray 764 blank tonight. Looking forward to the build and getting the rod on the water. For the people fishing the NFC 4wt, which fly lines do you like on the 764?

Seth, I really enjoy fishing my NFC 4 and 5 wt. I like a 406 WF line on both rods.

I've tried a half dozen 4wts ( including the 406) on my 764. Barrio small stream line was the clear winner for me. Great combo casting and fishing.
