I recently built and fished a 764 for few hours. Awesome rod. It may be fast for glass, but it's definitely nowhere near graphite. Effortlessly throws tiny dries with a Cortland peach.

That's what I'm shooting for with certain fisheries that I regularly visit. Sounds like I'm going to really enjoy mine.

Building $13,000 fly rods on a $150 blank?! What the what?!

Do you mean the $14,000 Hermes rod linked earlier in the thread? I wouldn't bet on many of them being sold. Sounds like a way for the company executives to get tackle made and write off the cost as a tax loss.

Am I blind or have they removed the Iconoglass from their website?

You're not blind. That's strange.

Perhaps they sold out the first batch. Let’s hope they don’t do the same thing as EDGE rods by Gary Loomis. I supported their Kickstarter in 2016 and received an amazing 4wt blank. Last year in March me and my business partner ordered and paid six more blanks, but they haven’t delivered yet.

I don’t see any glass on their site any longer. I hope this just means in between runs and not discontinued product

Has anyone tried any of their newer graphite fly rods? Gamma Betta, LMX? The original F series is a very fast, a bit heavy (for graphite), but a fantastic casting rod. I broke my first blank trying to find a spline in the section up from the butt section (3'rd down) because there was no deflection and I just forced the rod to get it to bend. But if you want to cast laser tight loops (and not worry about playing fish), it is fantastic.

I compare this to the McFarland Tailwind which is light and fast, but still very fishable.

I'm wondering if those newer NFC blanks are lighter and a bit more fishable.

Carlz,

I built the Gamma Beta 9' 9wt awhile ago. It is an excellent, fast rod and perfect for fishing the NE coast. Too bad about their glass blanks, hope they get resurrected.

That is a great looking build Vlad, Thanks for the confirmation that the blanks are decent. I can't figure out much about their blanks Gamma Alpha, Gamma Beta, ....
and the fly rods seem to be the red headed step child.

And the iconoglass is a great rod. The more I cast it, the more I like it. I just have to get it out for some real fishing.

Thank you...FWIW, my understanding of their graphite blanks is that Gamma Alpha are more moderate blanks up to a 6wt, Gamma Beta are fast tapers from 5 to 12wt. Both Gamma series use more advanced materials than the Classic blanks.

Gama Beta 9wt isn’t the lightest 9wt blank but it isn’t the heaviest either. It has awesome butt strength and its fast taper is quite refined.

New LMX are awfully close in specs with recently discontinued Pac Bay Quickline blanks. The models (length/weight) are the same, specs either very close or same...even codes used are the same. They are priced about the same. Did North Fork acquire Quickline mandrels? This is pure speculation...I don’t know for sure.

I built on Quickline blanks from 7 to 10wt and liked those blanks very much. Will need to try the LMX to compare.

The blanks are back on their website. It’s states their $150.00 but when you check out it’s lists the price as $75.00. I ordered the 7’6” 4 wt. and the total with the federal tax was $120.00. I love the 8’ 5 wt. I built this spring

I know they internet is modern, but this is sounding like 'New Math'.

Sorry if I'm being dim here. Does the total of $120 include the rod blank, the 10% excise tax, and shipping?

Tom, yes according to their order form when I checked out $75 for the blank, $35 for shipping and federal excise tax $10.

weird that these would be subject to an excise tax. Then again, I believe it's typically built into the price. "sale" price? add the excise tax. I dunno....
regardless, it's still an incredible deal.

Evidently they itemize what is most likely the Dingell-Johnson act excise tax. Not collecting the tax would be odd. Itemizing it is just unusual, possibly because it is usually paid at the wholesale end before an item subject to it reaches the consumer. Federal Aid in Sport Fisheries Restoration has had dramatic benefit over the lifetime of many of us here. It is embedded in many fishing gear sales. Various provisions and amendments require complementary state laws in use of the excise tax, and I seem to recall that some states have their own form of a user-based excise tax like this. There could be an in-house accounting reason for itemizing the tax, or possibly, like sales tax in some states, itemizing is required in the home state. https://www.fws.gov/laws/lawsdigest/FASPORT.HTML

“Regardless, it’s still an incredible deal” I could not agree more. My 5 wt. is an outstanding rod and the blank is of the highest quality. Really looking forward to building out the 4 wt. blank

I have already built out the 4wt, and I think you are going to be pleasantly surprised when done

i got 3 graphite blanks in classic action earlier this year and shipping was $25 then, still $10 per blank FET, - just as covid hit. one thing to ask them about is if you want multiple blanks to order them at the same time - you might only pay one shipping charge but i am not certain of that - check with NFC.

i got the "classic" actions and I think "IMX/GLX" every time i cast them. the 8.5' 4wt is particularly sweet and laser accurate.

Planning on building the Iconoglass 7’6” 4wt and hoping to turn a birch bark handle. For those who have fished the rod so far, has there been much bending close to the handle? I think the birch bark will work if there is little to no bending at the handle area, to ensure the bark does not crack.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.
Thanks
Jason

I like the flex of this rod, the butt section does flex down to about 8" (approximately) above the grip. I don't like rods that flex too much into the grip, and this does not.

Can anyone tell me a good way of contacting NFC please, i'm in the uk and can't order online and want to see if they will ship to me, they don't seem to reply to email or FB, i'd rather not waste money calling if possible, tempted to give up on them but the blanks do sound a good deal.
