With the impending blank factory getting closer to operation I have spent part of the winter developing some new fly rods. Except for the 7wt, I am discontinuing the 8'9" 4pc Western Glass. The 3pc 8'6" Uni-S models are, and will continue to be a focus for my company. Since my specialty has largely been longer glass for Western or larger sized waters I decided that I should continue with that theme and introduce something entirely new to the market.

With that said I am pleased to announce the YS Glass Series. These are 9' 3 or 4pc (8'9" and perhaps 8'6" will soon follow) and are composed mostly of black eglass. Where they differ from most glass is the taper and weight. I have designed them on graphite tapers and the weight is reflected in that. For example, the 9' 3wt 4pc finished rod weighs just 2.7 oz. While they have the diameters and weight of graphite they cast and fish more like Uni-S Glass, but are even more durable. Pictures of the 9' 3wt 4pc will be posted soon. I imagined this series to be a viable alternative to the standard 9' graphite 3-8wts, creating rods that aren't stiff but still light and responsive. They will truly excel on large tailwaters, freestones, and warm water situations. A complete list of models will be coming in the next few weeks as well some immediate availability shortly, in both rods and blanks.

Finished Rods will be $600 and blanks $250.

Thanks for the continued support, without this forum most of this would not be possible.

Very cool. I love my 8’9” Western Glass, so if you can beat that, even better.

The ferrules on these are tip over and aren't comparable to the Helios. The Helios rods are high modulus 100% Carbon and fish/cast accordingly.

I'm looking forward to these also, based on the conversations Dusty and I have had throughout the winter/spring about these tapers, they won't disappoint.

VERY excited about these Dusty! I've had a couple of 9ft 5wt glass rods (McFarland Black S-Glass and Seele) in the past so I am really intrigued by your new series.

My 906 blank arrived today, and I am excited to build it out.

The diameters are really thin for glass--surprisingly so. I'll actually need to build up the arbor a fair bit for my wood insert.

I have always read that fiberglass rod blanks have to made using larger diameters to get the same power as carbon fiber blanks or they would need more fiberglass which would make them too heavy. Apparently this is a misconception.

I think that’s what Dusty is saying about one of the advantages of this new material. It turns the conventional wisdom on its head.

I’ll follow up more and share my own opinion once I build the rod out.

I look forward to the review Glacier. My understanding matches dmiller328's and I wondered how e glass would facilitate graphite tapers and diameters. I saw the comment Dusty made about e glass.....but I didn't get a "new material" vibe from the comment. Since we know all the Sinitrix has been depleted from the earth lol.

Just the nuts and bolts of my mind eagerly wanting to know more about this series. I should probably just call Dusty on the topic but it makes good forum banter.....

Sorry about that--"new material" wasn't a good choice of words. I don't know much other than it's e-glass either used in some new way or something similar.

But whatever it is, it is light and very interesting.

Since this is the "What's New . . ." section, let's stay away from banter and stick to information or questions that the manufacturer or those who have handled/tried the rods can answer.

I am using a different approach to combining materials. The vast majority of the blank is still eglass, the feel is still glass, but the end result is graphite diameters and weights. I'm not going into specifics of the percentage of the different materials used, but I'm thrilled with the end result.

And I’m really looking forward to the results and delivery of the 6wt. (Would love both but my 4wt selection is getting out of hand!).

Having rods from both Dusty, Shane and soon one that is essentially a collaboration is pretty cool.
