For the big water/big fish enthusiast, I'll be building a run of 10 s-glass rods rolled here in the US by Mike McFarland. The blanks are 8'4" 8/9wt 3pc tip-overs in raw, designed specifically for inshore and nearshore saltwater use, though these rods will also be extremely well suited to throwing large flies and battling wind for other strong species such as pike/musky, steelhead (think Oregon coast winter run fish where overhead space is limited), Great Lakes carp and big bass. These will start at $675 shipped. The prototype is under construction and I'll post up some photos as soon as it's done. Please feel free to PM with inquiries!

Marty

Dusty, thanks for all the encouragement, enthusiasm and support along the way. Nice to see there's still some appreciation for top quality US-made product.

sweet, I can't wait to see these...

that 8-8.5' range is indeed perfect for my Oregon coastal streams (my goto is a 7/8 wt @ 8'6")

Just took delivery of the production blanks, to be paired with Lemke titanium seats. The prototype will go on the dryer this week, so by next weekend I can get 'er out looking for reds. I do think these will really shine with big winter fish in OR/OP also where overhead clearance is a major issue - hope to get out there in February, and will bring one along!

Wish I had the funds to get my hands on one! I'm waiting for Echo to release their big water glass rods next fall.

Guys,

Many thanks for the replies here and PMs! The prototype came off the dryer and I took it out with a few lines today, just for a lawn cast. A bunch of floaters in line weights 7-10 all gave it a good workout, but RIO Permit WF8 and WF9 really made for effortless casting. I have an old DT8 line of unknown manufacture that I found easy to aerialize and cast accurately, so I'll probably beat the remaining tar out of it in the next few days on the water. The recovery on this taper is exactly what I was looking for - progressive faster profile that drives tight loops. We get a fair amount of wind here, and the additional strength in the back end of the blank will certainly help pull marsh munchers out of the spartina. Photos of the shop rod to follow...

Marty

So the hurricane set me back a bit in getting this one ready to go but here are photos of the shop rod. Again, the 10 limited release rods will get the Lemke TITA seats with a copper-and-teal wrap scheme, but the demo rod is shown below.
